CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard women’s basketball gave their head coach
Kathy Delaney-Smith two gifts on Friday: a spot in the 2019 Ivy League Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by TIAA and her 600
th career victory.
Delaney-Smith, already the winningest coach in Ivy League history, is the 20th coach in Division I women’s basketball history to reach 600 career wins. Through the course of her impressive career, she has amassed 11 Ivy League titles, six NCAA Tournament appearances and seven trips to the NIT.
The Crimson raced out to a 23-8 first-quarter lead on Friday and never looked back, defeating Cornell, 80-38. Four players scored in double-figures for Harvard (8-5), led by
Katie Benzan’s game-high 17 points. After the game, the players surrounded their head coach to congratulate her on the marquee accomplishment.
Besides the large number of victories, Delaney-Smith will also be remembered as the first coach in either women’s or men’s NCAA history to lead a No. 16 seed past a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when her 1997-98 squad defeated Stanford, 71-67.
