Morgan, Samuels Take Home Men's Basketball Weekly Awards

PRINCETON, N.J. -- After impressive outings that led to victories, Cornell senior Matt Morgan was named Ivy League Player of the Week, while Dartmouth freshman Taurus Samuels claimed Rookie of the Week.
 
This weekend saw Princeton improve to 2-0 in League play with a season sweep of the Quakers, while Dartmouth opened League action with a win over Harvard at Leede Arena.
 
The Ivy League currently sits as the 12th strongest conference (out of 32) in the country according to the most recent KenPom conference RPI rankings. Both Penn (then No. 16 Villanova) and Princeton (then No. 17 Arizona State) tout wins over nationally-ranked teams this season. 
 
Ivy League play will continue as the last four teams are set to tip-off Saturday, Jan. 19. Yale travels to Brown and Columbia heads to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell with both games will be available on ESPN+. 
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matt Morgan, Cornell (Sr., G – Concord, N.C.)
  • Morgan helped the Big Red finish its non-conference slate with an 8-8 record
  • Became the sixth player in Ivy League history to reach 2,000 career points as he matched his personal best with 38 points in a win at Towson
  • Connected on 13-of-19 shots from the floor and 9-of-14 from beyond the arc, while adding six rebounds, four assists and a steal
  • His nine three-pointers tied a Cornell record and his 38 points set a SECU Arena record
  • Ranks second on the Ivy League’s career 3-pointer list – surpassing Harvard’s Laurent Rivard – and enters League play six points behind Ryan Wittman’s Cornell scoring record and moving into the top five in scoring in league history.
  • Morgan was dubbed College Sports Madness Mid-Major National Player of the Week
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Taurus Samuels, Dartmouth (Fr., G – Oceanside, Calif.)
  • Helped Dartmouth open up Ivy League play with an 81-63 victory over Harvard at Leede Arena for the first time in 12 seasons
  • Registered six points, three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal in 13 minutes off the bench
  • Scored his six points in the final eight minutes of the game to help keep the Crimson at arm’s length as Dartmouth recorded its largest margin of victory against Harvard in 20 years
  • Three-star, ESPN-rate prospect that participated in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament as a member of Team USA as a high school senior
