PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton field hockey senior defender
Elise Wong has been selected as one of
four finalists for the 2018 Honda Sports Award, the organization announced. This marks the sixth time in the past decade that the Ivy League has produced a Honda Sports Award finalist – and the ninth time in Princeton history.
Wong, the 2018 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, becomes the
18th student-athlete in Ivy League history to be named a finalist and the 10th in the sport of field hockey. The Ivy League has had six Honda Sports Award winners with Princeton field hockey standout
Katie Reinprecht and Dartmouth cross country standout
Abbey D’Agostino claiming the League’s most recent honors in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Wong, a senior defender from Lake Forest, Illinois., is a 2018 NFHCA first-team All-American. She led her team to the NCAA semifinals and is a two-time NCAA All-Tournament team selection. With six shutouts on the year, Wong anchored a defensive unit posted the eighth lowest GAA (1.17) in the nation and had a stretch of 180 minutes of play without allowing a goal.
Wong graduates as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, a four-time All-Region and All-Ivy player while securing two NCAA Final Four All-Tournament awards.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 43 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2019 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 24, 2019, in downtown Los, Angeles.
The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The Honda Sport award winner for field hockey will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
