KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- Three Ivy League student-athletes were named to the
2018 United Soccer Coaches Men’s NCAA Division I Scholar All-America Teams, as announced by the organization.
The Ivy League is one of three NCAA Division I conferences to boast three Scholar All-America selections. Earlier,
six Ivies received Scholar All-Region accolades.
Columbia senior goalkeeper
Dylan Castanheira and Yale’s
Nicky Downs garnered second-team honors, while Brown senior defender
Gabe Welp claimed a spot on the third-team.
Senior
Dylan Castanheira, the 2018 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the First Team. The senior compiled a .787 goals-against average and a .812 save percentage this season, turning in five shutouts. The Landings, N.J., native boats a 3.43 GPA in economics.
A second-team All-Ivy recipient, Brown senior defender
Gabe Welp claimed Scholar All-East First-Team honors. He started all 17 games played and paced the team in minutes played, adding one assist. Welp owns a 3.80 GPA in economics.
Yale senior defender
Nicky Downs earned Scholar All-East First-Team accolades after turning in a 3.83 GPA in economics. Downs, a First-Team All-Ivy selection, tied for the team lead with five assists, which ranked second among League leaders in his final season.
To be eligible for selection, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout his career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (i.e., all-conference) or contributions to the success of his team.
