Princeton Falls to Michigan in Penalty-Kick Shootout

ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- Ivy League champion Princeton's season came to an end as Michigan advanced after 14 rounds on penalty kicks in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Michigan's Henry Mashburn stopped Princeton's Danny Hampton’s penalty in the 14th round and the Wolverines advanced past the Tigers, 11-10, in a shootout following a 1-1 draw in the snow. Princeton keep Jacob Schachner made a pair of saves in the shootout for Princeton, which had a chance to win twice, but had a kicks saved in the fifth and 12th rounds.

Princeton concludes the 2018 season with a 10-6-2 overall. The Tigers clinched the outright Ivy League Championship – its ninth all-time – and the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament finishing 5-1-1 in Ivy play. Princeton made its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2010. 

Senior Benjamin Martin put the Tigers on the board in the 39th minute with his first goal of the season. Martin came in to help Colvin during a counter attack and put the ball into the opposite corner past Mashburn.
 
Michigan was able to sneak in the equalizer during a good 10- minute stretch of the game that wasn't going in the way of the Tigers. Against the run of play, Princeton's Colvin was taken down with no whistle and the Wolverines took advantage with men forward. Noah Kleedtke knocked in a Peter Brown rebound after getting loose in the box.
