Men's Soccer All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia’s Arthur Bosua, Dartmouth’s Wyatt Omsberg and Columbia’s Vana Markarian received the Ivy League postseason awards after a vote by the Ancient Eight head coaches.

Columbia’s Kevin Anderson was named Ivy League Coach of the Year. Columbia junior Arthur Bosua (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was selected Offensive Player of the Year, while Dartmouth defender Wyatt Omsberg (Scarborough Maine) earned Defensive Player of the Year. Columbia freshman Vana Markarian (Ottawa, Ont.) was voted Rookie of the Year.

Bosua was a constant force on offense for the Columbia, starting all 17 games for the Lions. The junior led the Lions in both goals (8) and points (20), ranking third in the League in the former and tied for second in the latter. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native tallied three game-winning goals.

Bosua is the first Columbia student-athlete to earn Offensive Player of the Year since the award began in 2013, joining Princeton’s Thomas Scanner (2015) and Cameron Porter (2014) and Penn’s Duke Lacroix (2013). Bosua also earned unanimous first-team selection.

Omsberg played a key role in the Dartmouth defense, helping the Big Green to its third consecutive Ivy League title and a trip to the NCAA College Cup, where Dartmouth will host St. Francis Brooklyn Thursday, Nov. 17 in the first round.

Omsberg helped Dartmouth limit opponents to just 0.71 goals per game, tied for first among the Ivy League, while only allowing 12 goals on the season. Omsberg registered three goals and an assist from the backfield. Omsberg is the second consecutive Dartmouth player to earn Defensive Player of the Year and the fourth overall since the award became in 2013. Omsberg joins former teammate Stefan Cleveland (2015), Harvard’s Mark Ashby (2014) and Cornell’s Patrick Slogic (2013) to earn the defensive honor. Omsberg also earned unanimous first-team selection.

A midfielder from Ottawa, Ont., Markarian made a significant impact in his first season, helping the Lions to its first Ivy League title since 1993. Starting 14 games, Markarian recorded two goals and a helper to finish the season with five points, which ranks tied for sixth on the team. Markarian is the ninth Lion to earn Rookie of the Year accolades and first since Andrew Tinari did so in 2013.

Anderson, who has been at the helm since 2009, led Columbia to its first Ivy League title since 1993 and the 10th-ever in program history. The Lions finished with a 13-3-1 overall mark and a 5-1-1 record in League play to share the Ivy League title with Dartmouth. The 13 wins are the most under Anderson. This marks the first League honor for Anderson.

Columbia and Dartmouth led the way with three on the first team.

Columbia’s Alex Bangerl (Pforzheim, Germany) and Andrew Tinari (Holbrook, N.Y.) joined Bosua on the first team.

Bangeri was a consistent force for the Lions, starting all 17 games in the backfield. Bangeri and the Columbia defense limited opponents to a league-best 0.71 goals per game. The junior defender tallied three goals for six points, ranking fifth on the team.

Tinari saw action in 16 games this season for the Lions in the midfield. The senior midfielder found the back of the net once while dishing out two assists for four points.

Dartmouth’s Matt Danilack (Rockville, Md.) and James Hickok (Westport, Conn.) join Omsberg as first team selections.

Danilack leads the Big Green with 11 total points, which ranks tied for sixth in the League. The junior midfielder has tallied three goals while dishing out a team-high five assists. His five assists rank second among league leaders.

Hickok anchored the Dartmouth defense, seeing action in 16 games in the net for the Big Green. The Westport, Conn., native ranks second among league leaders in save percentage (.841) and goals against average (0.64), while ranking 11th nationally in the former and 15th in the latter. Hickok finished the year with six shutouts and has been backed up by a defense that has only allowed 12 goals on the season.

Penn and Princeton each placed two on the first team.

Quaker senior forward Alec Neumann (New Hope, Pa.) and senior midfielder Matt Poplawski (Bellevue, Wash.) earned first-team All-Ivy.

Neumann led the Quakers in goals (9) and points (20), ranking second in the League in both categories. The senior captain’s nine goals are the most by any Quaker since Omid Shokoufandeh in 2008. This is Neumann’s fourth All-Ivy honor, earning second-team honors in each of his three previous seasons.

Poplawski played a key role for Penn in the midfield, starting all 17 games. The senior netted four goals, while handing out an assist. His four goals rank second on the team. This is Poplawski’s second All-Ivy honor as the midfielder earned honorable mention as a freshman.

Representing Princeton on the first team is senior Greg Seifert (Woodland Parks, N.J.) and Patrick Barba (San Diego, Calif.).

Seifert was an offensive threat throughout the season. The senior forward paced the Ivies in 11 goals, four assists and 26 points. Seifert also registered three game-winning goals. This is the first All-Ivy award for Seifert.

Barba started all 17 games on defense for the Tigers, helping to limit opponents to 1.53 goals per game. The senior finished the year with two goals while dishing out three assists for seven points. This is the second All-Ivy honor for Barba, who was named to the first team a season ago.

Brown’s Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) rounded out the first team. Hagstrom started all 14 games for the Bears in the backfield. The sophomore helped Brown limit opponents to 1.24 goals per game while tallying a goal and an assist.  A season ago, Hagstrom was named to the All-Ivy First Team and shared the league’s top rookie honor with Dartmouth’s Amadu Kunateh.

Yale was represented on the All-Ivy teams by second team honorees Henry Flugstad-Clarke (Morristown, N.J.) and Nicky Downs (Lakeville, Conn.).
