Cornell Claims Inaugural Ivy League Wrestling Tournament Title

PRINCETON, N.J. — In what was a thrilling back-and-forth team points race between Cornell and Penn throughout the day, the Big Red ultimately pulled away from Penn in the last few championship bouts to claim the inaugural Ivy League Wrestling Tournament title in Princeton's Jadwin Gymnasium.

Cornell topped the field with 135.5 team points as five Big Red student-athletes claimed individual titles: Meyer Shapiro (157), Julian Ramirez (165), Simon Ruiz (174), Chris Foca (184), and Ashton Davis (285). Shapiro was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after winning by major decision and tech fall throughout the day.

Penn, who racked up 129.5 team points, finished the day with three individual titles as Ryan Miller (133), CJ Composto (141), and Cross Wasilewski (149) stood atop the podium at the end of the day.

Princeton ended the day with two individual champions as well as Marc-Anthony McGowan (125) and Luke Stout (197) took gold.

In addition to the individual titles, numerous Ivies punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships as the Ivy League received 26 pre-allocations in the first year of the tournament:

  • 133: Ryan Miller (Penn), Tyler Ferrara (Cornell)
  • 141: CJ Composto (Penn), Eligh Rivera (Princeton), Josh Saunders (Cornell), Lorenzo Frezza (Columbia)
  • 149: Cross Wasilewski (Penn), Ethan Fernandez (Cornell), Ty Whalen (Princeton)
  • 157: Meyer Shapiro (Cornell), Jude Swisher (Penn), Richard Fedalen (Columbia)
  • 165: Julian Ramirez (Cornell), Cesar Alvan (Columbia)
  • 174: Simon Ruiz (Cornell), Jack McGill (Columbia)
  • 184: Chris Foca (Cornell), Maximus Hale (Penn), Nick Fine (Columbia), Kole Mulhauser (Princeton)
  • 197: Luke Stout (Princeton), Mikey Dellagatta (Cornell)
  • 285: Ashton Davis (Cornell)

The Ivy League will now await the at-large selections, which will be announced on March 11, in hopes of more qualifiers. The brackets and seeding will be announced on NCAA.com at 8 p.m. on March 12. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers.
