PRINCETON, N.J. – Three tickets were punched in a matter of minutes on Friday night as Princeton, Cornell, and Yale all clinched spots in the 2024 edition of Ivy Madness, presented by TIAA, in New York City.
Highlighting the night was the highly anticipated matchup in Ithaca between Yale and Cornell for sole possession of first place in the Ivy standings. The matchup, which included 14 lead changes and six ties, lived up to the hype as Cornell clawed out a 65-62 victory over the Bulldogs. Cornell was led offensively by senior guard
Isaiah Gray who finished with a game-high 18 points including the final five Cornell points of the contest.
Cornell clinched its Ivy Madness berth with the win while Yale also earned its spot in the tournament based on results around the League. The Big Red improved to 9-1 in the Ivy standings while also picking up its 20th win of the season, moving to 20-4 overall. Yale slipped to 8-2 in Ivy play and 17-8 overall.
Over in Cambridge, Princeton captured a 66-53 road win over Harvard behind another huge offensive performance by sophomore guard
Xaivian Lee. Lee accounted for nearly half of Princeton’s scoring, putting up 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Joining Lee in double figures was
Caden Pierce who notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers were the first team Friday evening to clinch an Ivy Madness berth with the win over Harvard.
Following the game, Princeton also picked up its 20th victory of the year, improving to 20-3 overall and 8-2 in the Ivy League which is tied for second with Yale.
Brown and Columbia also faced off tonight in a matchup with big Ivy Madness implications. The second half went back-and-forth but with the score 64-62 in favor of Columbia with 2:08 to go, but Brown scored the final four points of the game on four made free throws to pull out the critical road win, 66-64. Senior guard
Kimo Ferrari led the Bears with 18 points off the bench while sophomore forward
Kalu Anya pulled down 13 rebounds and added a game-high seven assists.
Brown, Columbia, and Harvard all moved to 4-6 in the conference standings following tonight’s results and are in a three-way tie for fourth place and the final spot in Ivy Madness.
In Hanover, Penn captured an 82-69 road win over Dartmouth. The Quakers were led by freshman guard
Sam Brown who went 10-of-16 from the field and 6-of-7 from beyond.
Though three teams have clinched their spots in Ivy Madness, seeding is far from determined with four games remaining. The back-to-back weekend continues tomorrow, with Yale at Columbia (6 p.m.), Princeton at Dartmouth (6 p.m.), Brown at Cornell (6 p.m.) and Penn at Harvard (7 p.m.). All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
