2024 Volleyball Major Awards and All-Ivy Teams Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. – Prior to the start of the 2024 iteration of the Ivy League tournament, the Ivy League announced the selections of the All-Ivy volleyball teams on Thursday, composing the first and second teams, honorable mentions and a quartet of major awards.

Princeton’s Kamryn Chaney was named the Ivy League Player of the Year, Brown’s Jessie Golden earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, Cornell’s Mackenzie Parsons was unanimously chosen as the Rookie of the Year, and the Cornell coaching staff, led by Trudy Vande Berg, was named the Coaching Staff of the Year.

Kamryn Chaney takes the crown of Player of the Year in the Ivy League in 2024, impressing all season with a total of 12 double-doubles and four Player of the Week selections. Chaney led the Ivy League with 392 kills (4.4/set), being the only player in the Ivy League with an average of over 4.0 per set. On the national level, Chaney also ranks 17th in points per set and 24th in kills per set. Within conference action alone, Chaney averaged 4.92 kills per set. Across 89 sets played, Chaney also showed great numbers from the service line, finishing third with 37 in the Ivy League. Chaney had two signature performances this season, the first on September 21 when she compiled a conference-high 34 kills against High Point with 15 digs and the other on November 1 at Yale when she had 25 kills on 47 swings without a single error, making it another double-double with 13 kills as well.

After splitting the honor last season, Brown’s Jessie Golden brings home the sole rights of Defensive Player of the Year. Across 90 sets played, the junior led the conference with 374 digs (4.16/set), being the only defender with an average of over four digs per set. Golden snuck into the top ten of service aces on the season as well, tallying 28 on the year for the Bears. Within Ivy matches, Golden registered 4.41 digs per set.

Bursting onto the scene in the Ivy League to take home Rookie of the Year distinction is Cornell’s Mackenzie Parsons. The freshman middle blocker found herself in the top 10 in a number of statistical categories, including third in hitting percentage (.412), eighth in kills (262), sixth in points (335) and ninth in blocks (84). Parsons notched many standout performances in her first season, including September 20 against Le Moyne, hitting .800 with 12 kills on 15 attempts, and November 16 against Yale with a season-high 21 kills. Parsons currently ranks 15th in the nation with a .412 hitting percentage.

Head coach Trudy Vande Berg of Cornell leads the Ivy League’s coaching staff of the year honors, capturing honors with the help of assistant coaches Chanel Davis, Tamia Dockery and Tiana Dockery. After a 7-16 season in 2023, Vande Berg led her coaching staff, finishing with a 14-9 record, 8-6 in conference play en route to their first appearance in the four-team Ivy League Tournament in program history and the best Ivy League season since 2019. The Big Red used a refreshed style of play to aid their much-improved year of volleyball, placing second in the conference in assists (1,082), second in kills (1,168), and second in blocks (218).

In addition to the All-Ivy teams, the Ivy League also announced its volleyball Academic All-Ivy team, honoring players for their outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom. Brown’s Gabby Derrick, Columbia’s Eva Atkins, Cornell’s Megan Bickel, Dartmouth’s Piper Stevens, Harvard’s Lindsey Zhang, Penn’s Abigail Reid, Princeton’s Valerie Nutakor and Yale’s Halle Sherlock were honored.
