Princeton Claims Ivy League Women's Soccer Tournament Title

PRINCETON, N.J. — Princeton capped-off an impressive 2024 Ivy League season by becoming the first team to win both the Ivy League regular season and tournament titles, defeating Brown, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.

The Tigers, coming into the title game off a 3-1 win semifinal win Friday evening in which they outshot Harvard 20-7 and 8-4 in shots on goal, followed a similar pattern in their two-goal victory over Brown, outshooting the Bears 11-4 and 8-3 on target as they applied pressure to Brown all afternoon.

Princeton had a couple early chances in the form of a shot on goal and a pair of corner kicks, but Brown’s Bella Schopp came up with a save to keep it scoreless. Princeton’s Tyler McCarney had to come up with a pair of saves of her own through the first 20 minutes of the first half, but the experienced keeper kept Brown off the scoresheet and allowed her Tigers to settle in.

Just minutes after McCarney’s second save, the Tigers started taking control of the half. Recently named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, Pietra Tordin, had a pair of shots saved by Schopp, but Princeton broke through in the 34th minute to make it a 1-0 game. Drew Coomans found herself on the other end of a perfectly-placed long-ball into the box from Kate Toomey that forced Brown’s defenders and keeper to briefly hesitate. That split second pause allowed Coomans to collect the ball and chip it over Schopp’s head and into the net for the game’s first goal.

There wasn’t much action over the final 10-plus minutes of the half, just a single shot on target by the Tigers which was saved by Schopp, as it was a 1-0 game at the break.

After the half, tt took very little time for Princeton to double their lead as Lily Bryant scored in the 47th minute to make it 2-0. A corner kick from Heather MacNab came looping into the 18-yard box where Bryant, who had started the set-piece at the far post, had positioned herself free of any Brown defenders. Bryant’s right-footed chip volley out of the air soared over Schopp’s outstretched arm and gave the Tigers a bit of breathing room with a 2-0 lead.

Brown made a few changes and tried to be more offensive to erase the two-goal deficit, but Princeton’s defense was up to the task. The Tigers allowed just two Brown shots over the final 40-plus minutes of the game, both being saved by McCarney, as Princeton would secure the tournament title with the 2-0 victory.

Princeton earned the Ivy League’s Automatic Qualifier into the 2024 NCAA Tournament and will find out who they play during the selection show tomorrow beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET.
