PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The second-seeded Harvard Crimson captured the inaugural Ivy League women’s soccer tournament title on Sunday afternoon, defeating the upset-minded, fourth-seeded Columbia Lions, 3-0.
Harvard, coming off their 4-2 victory over Princeton Friday afternoon, controlled play in the first half, outshooting Columbia 13-2, but it was 0-0 at the half as
Paige Nurkin stopped the only two shots on target to preserve the clean sheet.
The Crimson wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second half, however, and once they did, the scoring gates had opened as Harvard scored three goals in an 18-minute span.
The Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament,
Josefine Hasbo, opened the scoring in the 53
rd minute, receiving a
Hannah Bebar pass in the middle of the field before firing a long range strike to put Harvard up 1-0. Then, nine minutes later, Hasbo doubled the Crimson lead with her second goal of the day, this goal being assisted by
Smith Hunter and
Gabby DelPico. The last Harvard goal of the day completed Hasbo’s hat trick. Hasbo’s third goal came from a pass by
Anna Rayhill.
In total, Harvard outshot Columbia 21-5 and 8-0 in shots on goal.
With the victory, Harvard earned the Ivy League’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
