David “Corky” Calhoun was a standout player on arguably the two greatest teams in Penn (and Ivy League) history.
As a junior in 1970-71, he started every game for a team that went undefeated through the regular season, advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight, and ranked as high as third nationally. A year later, he was a senior co-captain as the Quakers went 25-3 overall, again made the NCAA Elite Eight, and finished the season ranked second nationally by the Associated Press.
Calhoun was a first-team All-Ivy and All-Philadelphia Big 5 selection all three years he played varsity basketball for the Red and Blue, and as a senior he became the first player in program history named Most Valuable Player of the Philadelphia Big 5. Calhoun scored 1,066 points during his college career and led the 70-71 team in rebounding, and he was a member of the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame Inaugural Class in 1996.
Calhoun was the fourth overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 1972 NBA Draft, the second-highest NBA pick in program history behind Ernie Beck in 1953.
