PRINCETON, N.J. – With the 2022 Women’s Volleyball Tournament set to begin Friday in New Haven, Conn., the Ivy League has announced the All-Ivy teams and major award winners.
Yale and Princeton finished tied atop the 2022 standings and shared the regular season crown for the third time since 2017 and the two schools shared the major awards for 2022.
Senior setter Lindsey Kelly was unanimously named 2022 Ivy League Player of the Year after leading Princeton back to the top of the Ivy League. She wrapped-up the regular season with an Ivy League-leading 12.04 assists per set, dishing out 939 assists in 78 sets played. She was also one of the top servers in the conference, ranking tied for third with 31 total aces, and was a complete player chipping in with 219 digs, which ranked tied for eighth, and 24 kills.
Fellow Princeton senior, Cameron Dames, was named 2022 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. Dames, a libero, led the Ivy League in total digs and digs per set at 421 and 5.01, respectively, and proved to be a vital part of Princeton’s overall success with 70 assists and 8 service aces. Dames had a season-high 35 digs in an October win over Brown and reached 20-plus digs 6 other times during the season.
Rounding-out the major player awards was Princeton standout Lucia Scalamandre who unanimously won Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Scalamandre, a middle blocker from Topanga, Calif., did a little bit of everything for the Tigers in 2022. In just 26 sets played, she totaled 73 kills while hitting .425, had 7 service aces, and had 33 total blocks. The freshman came on strong down the stretch with double-digit kills in five of her last eight matches, including a season-high 17 on November 4
th in a win over Brown.
The 2022 Ivy League Coach of the Year went to Yale’s Erin Appleman. This is the second time since the award was introduced in 2014 that Appleman has come away as the league’s top coach, her first time earning the honor coming in 2018. Appleman led the Bulldogs back to the top of the Ivy League this year with a 21-2 overall record and 13-1 mark in conference play. Yale won 17 straight matches from Sept. 9 – Nov. 4.
Five of the eight Ivy League teams were represented on the First and Second All-Ivy Teams with the remaining three members having representatives named Honorable Mention All-Ivy.
Princeton had four players named First Team All-Ivy, unanimous selections Kelly and Dames, as well as Scalamandre and senior Avery Luoma. Yale had two First Team All-Ivy recipients in sophomore setter Carly Diehl and junior outside hitter Audrey Leak. Filling out the rest of the All-Ivy First Team were Brown’s Sophia Miller and Beau Vanderlaan, who were the Ivy League’s leaders in total kills and hitting percentage, respectively. Miller, Vanerlaan, and Luoma are all making their second-consecutive appearance on the All-Ivy First Team.
The All-Ivy Second Team is comprised of players from five member institutions. Dartmouth and Yale each had two players named Second Team All-Ivy while Brown, Cornell, and Princeton each had one representative. Dartmouth had a pair of juniors on the list in Ellie Blain and Bomi Ogunlari. For Blain, it is her second-straight Second Team honor. Yale’s two honorees were junior Maile Somera and sophomore Mila Yarich. Brown’s Kate Sheire, Cornell’s Joanna Chang, and Princeton’s Melina Mahood completed the All-Ivy Second Team.
Harvard senior Bella Almanza, Columbia senior Saj McBurrows, Dartmouth junior Amelia Gibbs, Penn freshman Abby Reid, and Yale sophomore Gigi Barr were the Honorable Mention recipients for 2022.
Additionally, one Ivy League volleyball student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the court as members of the 2022 Ivy League Volleyball Academic All-Ivy team. Brown junior
