PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton’s
Obiageri Amaechi and
Clara Roth were announced as conference-level nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, the NCAA announced Monday afternoon. In total, there are 152 conference-level nominees for the national award.
The NCAA Woman of the Year program is rooted in Title IX and has recognized graduating female college athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
A two-time All-American in discus, Amaechi qualified for the NCAA Championship each year she was eligible. As a sophomore, she finished seventh and she placed 13th this past year. The San Francisco native holds the Ivy League discus record, with her throw of 57.95m in the 2019 Outdoor Heps Championships.
Roth, also a two-time All-American, garnered three all-Ivy and all-region honors in her time with the Tigers field hockey team. She was the recipient of Princeton’s 2021 C. Otto von Kienbusch Award, which is presented annually to a Princeton senior woman of high scholastic rank who has demonstrated general proficiency in athletics and the qualities of a true sportswoman. During her junior year, Roth garnered Regional Player of the Year honors on her way to leading Princeton to the national championship game.
The Woman of the Year Selection Committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will now choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division — from the conference-level nominees. The Top 30 honorees will be announced in September. From there, the selection committee will narrow the pool to three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the 2020 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.
