Ivy League Hands Out Men's Basketball All-Ivy, Major Awards

2020 All-Ivy Teams

PRINCETON, N.J.
- The 2020 Ivy League postseason awards have been announced, and the top honor go to members of Penn and Yale.  
 
Penn’s AJ Brodeur and Yale’s Paul Atkinson shared the Ivy League’s Player of the Year Award, James Jones of the Bulldogs was named the league’s Coach of the Year, and the Quakers’ Jordan Dingle earned the nod as the Rookie of the Year.
 
Jalen Gabbidon of Yale and Brown’s Jaylan Gainey were named the Ivy League’s Co-Defensive Players of the Year.
 
Jones earned the League’s Coach of the Year award after leading the Bulldogs to a 23-7 overall record and an outright Ivy League title with an 11-3 mark in league play. The all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at Yale, Jones added to his 310 career wins and helped Yale improve their Ivy League record over the last six seasons to 63-21The league title is the Bulldogs’ fourth crown in those six seasons.
 
Atkinson played a key role in helping lead Yale to the league crown as well. The junior forward from West Palm Beach, Fla. averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest for Yale this season. His numbers were even better in league play, where he averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He had his best night of the season in Yale’s rivalry game with Harvard on February 7. That night, he poured in 28 points and added six rebounds and five steals.
 
Brodeur was just as good for the Quakers. He scored 17.3 points per game, reeled in 8.9 rebounds, dished out 140 assists, and swatted away 48 shot attempts in 27 games. He had 14 double-doubles on the season, including a triple-double in Penn’s final regular season game at Columbia. Against the Lions on March 7, the senior forward from Northborough, Mass. netted 21 points and he added 10 boards and 10 helpers as Penn took the 85-65 win over Columbia.
 
Dingle earned the Rookie of the Year honor by averaging 13.5 points per game for Penn. The Valley Stream, N.Y. native made a splash right out of the gate, netting 24 points against Alabama in his first collegiate game and he added a 27-point effort against Arizona.
 
Gainey and Gabbidon shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor, but they made their defensive impact in very different ways. Gainey, a sophomore forward from Greensboro, N.C., led the league with 54 blocked shots in 25 games - an average of 2.2 blocks per game. Gabbidon, a junior guard from Harrisburg, Pa., pilfered the ball from opponents 40 times in 30 games, an average of 1.3 per contest.
 
Yale’s Azar Swain and Jordan Bruner joined their teammate Atkinson on the All-Ivy First Team. Swain averaged 16 points per game and made 93 3-point field goals on the season, while Bruner nearly averaged a double-double, scoring 10.9 points and lassoing 9.2 rebounds per game.
 
Brodeur was also included on the All-Ivy First Team along with Harvard’s Noah Kirkwood and Richmond Aririguzoh from Princeton. Kirkwood scored 12.1 points per game for the Crimson, and he also averaged 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Aririguzoh tallied 12.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the Tigers.
 
Five different Ivy schools were represented on the All-Ivy Second Team. Dartmouth’s Chris Knight, Jaelin Llewellyn from Princeton, Tamenang Choh of Brown, Harvard’s Chris Lewis, and Columbia's Mike Smith all earned places on the second team. Penn’s Devon Goodman, and Cornell’s Terrance McBride were Honorable Mention All-Ivy as well.
