Martina Jerant, Brown

An Olympian and four-time All-Ivy selection, Martina Jerant led the Bears to three Ivy League titles and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1994.

During her career, she was a three-time First Team All-Ivy selection, the 1992 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, and the 1993 Ivy League Player of the Year as only a sophomore. Jerant stands as the Bears’ all-time leading rebounder (991 career rebounds) and as the program’s fourth all-time leading scorer (1,680 career points).

One of just three players in Brown women’s basketball history to earn First Team All-Ivy honors three times, Jerant remains one of just five to earn All-Ivy honors all four years as she gained Second Team All-Ivy accolades as a freshman in 1992. An Academic All-Ivy selection in 1994, she helped lead the team to Ivy League championships in 1992, 1993, and 1994.

A three-time team MVP, Jerant is Brown’s all-time field goal percentage leader (52.8 percent), while ranking second in career free throws made (435) and second in career blocks (213). Jerant propelled Brown to its first NCAA Tournament berth in 1994, pulling down 24 rebounds – one shy of the school record – in an Ivy League playoff game against Dartmouth, which determined the conference’s automatic bid to March Madness.

Jerant won the Marjorie Brown Smith Award as Brown’s female varsity student-athlete of the year in 1994. She is one of seven female student-athletes at Brown to win both the Marjorie Brown Smith Award and the Kate Silver ’86 Award – which she received in 1992 as the first-year female varsity student-athlete of the year.

A member of the Canadian National Team, Jerant competed in the Junior World Qualifying Games in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, she took part in the Goodwill Games and the International Student Games before participating in the Olympic Qualifying Games in 1995. Jerant became the Brown women’s basketball program’s first Olympian in 1996 when she represented Canada in the Atlanta Summer Games.

After earning her degree in Biology from Brown, Jerant moved to Croatia, the homeland of her parents, to play in its senior basketball league, winning the Nations Championship. She also competed in the Euro League traveling internationally to Italy, Germany, Austria, France, the Czech Republic, and Israel.

Jerant continued her basketball career as an assistant basketball coach at Columbia University, while completing a Master’s in Public Health. She has enjoyed an extensive career in the fields of health care and fitness and has acted as an Administrative Coordinator and Research Associate at the University of Michigan since 2016.
