12 Ivies Earn NFL Looks as Undrafted Free Agents

PRINCETON, N.J. -- In the two weeks following the 2019 NFL Draft, 12 Ivies have signed undrafted free agent contracts or accepted tryout invitations from NFL teams.

Seven players have signed undrafted free agent contracts, led by a trio from the undefeated Ivy League champion Princeton Tiger club. Each will be attempting to transition to a new position at the next level, with wide receivers Stephen Carlson and Jesper Horsted signed as tight end prospects by the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears, respectively. Much like his evolving role at Princeton, quarterback John Lovett was signed as a multi-positional threat by the Kansas City Chiefs, though his NFL opportunity will likely be as an H-back, fullback or tight end.

A pair of First Team All-Ivy offensive linemen, Dartmouth’s Matt Kaskey and Harvard’s Larry Allen Jr., inked undrafted free agent contracts. Kaskey signed with the Los Angeles Rams, while Allen Jr. joined the Dallas Cowboys—the team with which his father played 12 NFL seasons. Second-Team All-Ivy defensive lineman Daryle Banfield out of Brown also signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Chicago Bears.

A pair of former Ivies who completed their collegiate eligibility at other schools—former Brown quarterback TJ Linta and former Penn defensive lineman Louis Vecchio—earned NFL looks. Linta signed an undrafted free agent deal after a graduate year at Wagner, while Vecchio earned a tryout offer from the Philadelphia Eagles after a season at Vanderbilt.

Joining Vecchio on the list of Ivies earning NFL tryouts were Dartmouth’s Rocco Di Leo (DL – Cincinnati Bengals), Dartmouth’s Kyran McKinney-Crudden (DB – Detroit Lions), Harvard’s Stone Hart (DL – Cleveland Browns) and Penn’s Tommy Dennis (OL – New York Giants).

Kaskey, Di Leo, McKinney-Crudden, Allen Jr., Hart, Horsted and Lovett were First Team All-Ivy selections in 2018, while Banfield, Dennis and Carlson were Second Team All-Ivy picks.

Several Ivies remain on the market, most notably Columbia kicker Chris Alleyne, Columbia long snapper Patrick Eby and Princeton running back Charlie Volker

21 Ivies earned spots on NFL 53-man rosters entering the 2018 season, with as many as 24 dotting depth charts throughout the most recent campaign. Seven Ivies advanced to the 2018 NFL playoffs, with Brown alumnus and New England Patriots fullback James Develin appearing in his third-straight Super Bowl and becoming the first Ivy to win three Super Bowls as a player. Harvard alum and San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk also appeared in his third-straight Pro Bowl.
