By Tony Price, Penn ‘79
IvyLeague.com: Why did you choose to attend an Ivy League institution?
Tony: My high school coach
Don Adams took me under his wing and mentored me. He told me that I should be thinking about going to an Ivy League school, and when it came time for me to choose a university during my senior year, he took me to visit Princeton first and Penn second. I fell in love with Penn. I went to a Big Five game and that was it, I knew I wanted to attend Penn and live in the City of Philadelphia.
IvyLeague.com: How do you feel your Ivy League experience helped prepare you for your career?
Tony: Attending the University of Pennsylvania and graduating gave me a lot of confidence that I used later in my career. I do not feel my background prepared me for the academic work at Penn, but I persevered and graduated in four years. The hard work that I put in and the fact that I proved to myself I could do it definitely helped me throughout my career.
IvyLeague.com: What is your most memorable experience from your time as an Ivy League student-athlete?
Tony: What I remember the most about being a student-athlete at Penn is our Final Four run, in 1979. It was my senior year, I had great teammates and we finally put it all together. We had great chemistry, won the Ivy League title and the Big Five championship and then made our run to the Final Four. We worked together as a team; without that teamwork, none of our accomplishments that season would have been possible.
IvyLeague.com: What does it mean to you to be a Legend of Ivy League Basketball?
Tony: Being given this honor as a Legend of Ivy League Basketball is very humbling and most appreciated. I only wish I could share it with my teammates, because all of my success is also their success. I would not have been the player I was without them.
