SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Harvard senior guard
Bryce Aiken is one of four mid-major players to be among the 20 NCAA Division I point guards named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year watchlist.
The Ivy League, which heads into the
2019-20 campaign ranked the 10th-best Division I men’s basketball, has put 14 point guards onto the Bob Cousy Award watch list all-time since its inception in 2004. Aiken is the fourth Crimson student-athlete to be named to the watch list, joining
Siyani Chambers (2014-15, 2013-14),
Brandyn Curry (2013-14) and
Jeremy Lin (2009-10).
Aiken, a two-time first-team All-Ivy recipient, helped Harvard to its seventh Ivy League title in nine years in 2018-19, including its second in a row. Aiken averaged 22.2 points per game in his junior campaign, which is the third highest mark in program history.
The guard put together four of the top-17 single-game scoring marks in program history, including 44 against Columbia a season ago, which is the second-highest tally, and 38 against Yale in the championship game of Ivy League tournament. Aiken registered 19 points as Harvard defeated Georgetown to win its first National Invitational Tournament (NIT) game in program history before falling to NC State, 78-77, in the second round.
The Randolph, New Jersey native was a Lou Henson All-America, USBWA All-District first team and NABC All-Region second team honoree as a junior.
Bob Cousy played for Holy Cross from 1946-1950 winning an NCAA Championship in 1947. He was named a Consensus First-Team All-American in 1950. His success continued at the professional level as a six-time NBA Champion (1957, 1959-1963), NBA Most Valuable Player (1957) and 13-time NBA All-Star (1951-63). In 1996, he was named a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
New to the award this season is Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2020 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2020 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at
The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five.
