Yale, Columbia Claim National Titles at 2018 IRA Championship

Final Results

WEST WINDSOR
, N.J. – Two Ivies repeated as national championships at the 2018 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta.

The varsity four finals were canceled by the IRA due to wind conditions, but moved to Princeton’s course on Lake Carnegie but all results are unofficial due to floating starts by the crews. The straight four did finish third for a podium finish and the coxed four placed fifth.

The Yale Heavyweight Varsity Eight made it two straight national championships by capturing the grand final. In the men’s lightweight varsity eight, Columbia narrowly edged Princeton by .732 of a second to claim its second national title in three years.

YALE REPEATS AS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Though all crews faced rough conditions at the start, Yale managed to pull out to an early lead with Washington and Harvard trailing close behind. As Harvard slipped back at the 1000, it was Yale and Washington out in front. Despite a charge from Washington around the 1250 mark, Yale responded definitively and won by almost three seconds.

The Bulldogs clocked a 6:04.648 in the men’s heavyweight grand final to capture the program’s second title. Harvard finished fourth in 6:10.717 followed by Princeton (6:11.161) in fifth and Brown (6:14.272) in sixth place. In the men’s heavyweight varsity eight petite final, Dartmouth finished third with a time of 6:33.801.

Though Yale takes home the national title, Washington remains the Ten Eyck Team Champions with 211 points. Yale came in seconds at 199 points, and California followed in third with 196 points. While the IRA National Championships conclude the official season for most of the competitors, both Yale and Harvard head back to New London in preparation for the Yale-Harvard Regatta. The 153rd edition of the Yale-Harvard Regatta takes place Saturday, June 9.

COLUMBIA CAPTURES IRA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Columbia lightweight rowing varsity eight earned its second IRA National Championship in program history, all coming in three years, after topping five other crews in the grand finals on Mercer Lake Sunday morning.
The Lions crossed in 6:18.782, followed by Princeton in 6:19.514. Harvard (6:24.255), Penn (6:26.130) and Yale (6:33.264) finished in third, fourth and sixth, respectively. It is just the fourth varsity eight national championship since 1928 for any of the three Columbia crews. The Lions have now medaled in five of the last IRA regattas.

Columbia finished 2018 with just one loss and swept all of its regular season cup races for the first time since 2000 and the second varsity eight posted an undefeated record. The varsity eight featured just one senior and five underclassmen.
