2017-18 Winter Academic All-Ivy Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League released its list of student-athletes selected for 2017-18 Academic All-Ivy honors in its winter sports today. The 80 men and women were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each institution nominated five men and five women from its eligible student-athletes.

BROWN
Quincy Beck, Sr., Women’s Squash, Neuroscience (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada)
Served as team captain for second-straight season; played No.1 all four years; won her final match against Williams, 3-0.
 
Thomas Blecher, Sr., Men’s Squash, Political Science (Toronto)
Team Captain; played No.1 all four years; led the Bears to a win over No. 12 Drexel with a 3-0 victory.
 
Sam Donovan, Sr., Women’s Hockey, Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations (New Brighton, Minn.)
Assistant captain; honorable mention All-Ivy; led the team in points (16) and tied for the team lead in goals (8) while adding eight assists; led the Bears in goal scoring for four-straight years; played in every game in her career at College Hill.
 
Samuel Koch, Sr., Men’s Fencing, Economics (San Francisco)
Earned first-team All-Ivy; came in 22nd at the NCAA Northeast Regional; placed third with an 8-4 record at the Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins.
 
Sam Lafferty, Sr., Men’s Ice Hockey, Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations (Hollidaysburg, Pa.)
Second-team All-Ivy; led the team in points (22) and assists (14) while adding eight goals; assistant captain.
 
Shayna Mehta, Jr., Women’s Basketball, Biology, (San Francisco)
Second-team All-Ivy; eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau on Dec. 10; ranked second in the Ivy League in points per game (18.5) and third in steals per game (2.2); set a single game record for three-pointers made (nine) vs. No. 20 California; spent 18 days in Chennai, India with Crossover Basketball & Scholars Academy helping marginalized communities in India through the use of basketball as a vehicle of change.
 
Tosin Oyemole, Sr., Men’s Track and Field, Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations (Elkridge, Md.)
Second-team All-American in the distance medley relay; second-team All-Ivy in the 400m; earned a silver medal in the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championship in the 400m; team captain.
 
Carly Paul, Sr., Women’s Track and Field, International Relations (Fort Collins, Colo.)
First-team All-Ivy; won the pentathlon at the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships with 4,013 total points; became the first Bear to win the pentathlon since 2008; also scored in the long jump and high jump; broke the school record in the long jump with a mark of 19-9 ¾.
 
Maddie Salesky, Jr., Women’s Swimming & Diving, Health and Human Biology (San Rafael, Calif.)
Key leg on two-school record breaking relays (200 free, 400 free); made two A Finals at the Ivy League Championships.
 
Justin Staudenmayer, Sr., Wrestling, Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.)
Qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time at 157 pounds after placing sixth at the EIWA Championships; honorable mention All-Ivy; won the 157-pound weight class at the Navy Classic; led the team with 23 wins, eight dual wins, and seven EIWA dual wins; served team as captain.

Mary Ashby, Jr., Women’s Swimming & Diving, Psychology (Moraga, Calif.)
Set three Columbia pool records in two relays and 100-freestyle with the first sub-50.00 in program history at Uris; placed fourth at the Ivy League Championships in 400-freestyle; member of the winning 200 freestyle relay squad (1:31:95 - a Rutgers pool record) at the Frank Elm Invitational.
 
Iman Blow, Jr., Women’s Fencing, Biological Studies (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
2018 Individual women’s foil NCAA champion; NCAA Northeast Regional champion; first-team All-Ivy with 13-2 record at Ivy League Round Robins; first women’s fencer at Columbia to win an individual NCAA title since 2010; 44-7 regular season record.
 
Sarah Hardie, Sr., Women’s Track and Field, Political Science (Eastport, N.Y.)
Earned All-America honors after running the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships; Ivy League Champion in the 1K (meet record 2:44.85) and distance medley relay; set school records in the 1K, mile and 4x800m relay.
 
Osama Khalifa, Sr., Men’s Squash, Statistics (Cairo)
Named 2018 Skillman Award winner; 2018 Ivy League Player of the Year; played in the No.1 position and guided the Lions to the Ivy League championship; finished 12-2 in regular season (6-1 Ivy League); unanimous first-team All-Ivy; one of three Lion captains.
 
Sam Moelis, So, Men’s Fencing, Biological Sciences (Hewlett, N.Y.)
Runner-up at 2018 NCAA Championships in men’s foil; totaled an 18-4 record at NCAA Championships (ranked 2nd going into finals); 36-12 regular season record; qualified for second-straight NCAA Championships with fourth-place finish at regionals.
 
Akua Obeng-Akrofi, Sr., Women’s Track and Field, Psychology (Lawrenceville, Ga.)
Won the 400m title at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships; won the 400m title at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, running the second fastest time in school history (53.39); claimed third in the 200m dash at Ivy Heps.
 
Jayden Pantel, Sr., Men’s Swimming & Diving, Economics (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada)
Earned Academic All-Ivy for third time in his career; named Ivy League’s Ron Keenhold Career High Point diver; competed at NCAA Championships in both the 3M and platform dive.
 
Garrett Ryan, Sr., Wrestling, History (Scottsdale, Ariz.)
Posted a 31-8 record at heavyweight; four-time NCAA Championship qualifier, one of just four in school history; led team in major decisions with eight; did not allow anyone to score bonus points against him; first-team All-Ivy at heavyweight.
 
Alek Sauer, Jr., Men’s Track and Field, Biological Sciences (Yardley, Pa.)
Two-time indoor 1,000 meter Ivy League champion; led Lions to All-Ivy performance in 4x800 meter relay (second-place); won the 1K at the Villanova Invitational with the fifth-best time in school history;

NCAA finalist; All-American in 100 and 200 breaststroke; holds Ivy and school records in both events; eight-time Ivy champion; swept 100, 200 breast titles all four years.
 
Michele Garceau, Sr., Women’s Squash, Human Development (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada)
First-team All-Ivy; 2017 second-team CSA All-American; two-time qualifier for CSA individual championships; 32-32 career record from top third of the order.

Third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American; second-team All-Ivy; helped team qualify for the Ivy League Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time.

Second-team All-Ivy in the 1000 and 4x800 meter relay after finishing second in both at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships; team captain; earned all-region in cross country; 2017 Indoor Ivy Heps champ in the 800m.

All-Ivy honorable mention; ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year finalist; co-captain of a team with the nation’s highest winning percentage; had 20 points this season on seven goals and 13 assists.

Miles Wright, Sr., Men’s Basketball, Sociology (East Stroudsburg, Pa.)
Co-Captain; led team in scoring (12.3 ppg); led Ivy League in steals (41) and ranked fifth in free throw pct. (.826); first player in Dartmouth history with 1,000 pts, 400 rebounds, 100 three-pointers and 100 steals.
 
Devin Buffalo, Sr., Men’s Ice Hockey; Government (Wetaskiwin, Alberta)
Won 15 games in net while earning second-team All-Ivy honors; finalist for the 2018 Hockey Humanitarian Award.
 
Cy Lippold, Jr., Women’s Basketball, Linguistics (East Stroudsburg, Pa.)
Led Ivy League with 5.3 assists per game; her 144 career assists is second in Dartmouth annals; fifth in the League with 2.0 steals per game; second on the team with 12.3 ppg; started every game of the season.
 
Brian McLaughlin, Sr., Men’s Skiing, Engineering (Topsfield, Mass.)
NCAA champion in the giant slalom; three-time first-team All-American in his career; won eight career races; won four races this year; 18 career podium finishes; made FIS World Cup debut in December in the giant slalom at Beaver Creek, Colo.
 
Alvin Heuman, Sr., Men’s Squash, Government (Southport, Conn.)
Tri-captain; first-team All-American this year; second-team All-American last year; two-time first-team All-Ivy; won final match in Potter Cup to lead team to best final ranking (No. 5) in 14 years.
 
Foreste Peterson, Sr., Women’s Skiing, Environmental Studies (Berkeley, Calif.)
Captain for women’s alpine team; two-time first-team All-American during career; won nine races in career; earned a trip to the podium 24 times during her career, including nine this year; made World Cup debut last October.
 
Emma Roberts, Jr., Women’s Squash, Government (Wellesley, Mass.)
Finished season with a 9-7 record mostly at No. 8; picked up wins against Penn and Brown; won all three of her matches at the Kurtz Cup.
 
Henry Senkfor, Sr., Men’s Swimming and Diving, Economics (Pepper Pike, Ohio)
Named Team Captain for 2017-18; competed in the finals of the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back at the Ivy League Championships; earned an NCAA B cut time in the 200 IM.
 
Caroline Shaunessy, Jr., Women’s Ice Hockey, Government (Duxbury, Mass.)
Served as alternate captain; sixth on the team with six points on four goals and two assists; opened the year scoring in each of the first two games.
 
Hayley Winter. Sr., Women’s Swimming and Diving; Film and Media Studies (Grass Valley, Calif.)
Named team captain for 2017-18; competed in the finals of the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free at the Ivy League Championships.
 
 
HARVARD
Katie Benzan, So., Women’s Basketball, Psychology (Wellesley, Mass.)
Unanimous first-team All-Ivy; Ivy League All-Tournament Team; led team in scoring with 13.5 ppg; finished among the top-10 in the nation in three-point shooting percentage; set the program record with 99 three-pointers made this season; named Ivy League Player of the Week (Feb. 5) after posting back-to-back 20-point games vs. Columbia and Cornell.
 
Eli Dershwitz, Jr., Men’s Fencing, History (Sherborn, Mass.)
Clinched his second straight NCAA Championship title in sabre; first-team All-America; posted a perfect 23-0 record in the round robins of the NCAA Championships; named to All-Ivy first team; crowned the individual champion in sabre at the Ivy League Round Robins; finished the 2017-18 season with a 47-6 overall record plus-131 touch differential.
 
Miki Dahlke, So., Women’s Swimming and Diving, Applied Mathematics (Mill Valley, Calif.)
Competed in the 100 fly, 100 free, and 200 free at the NCAA championships; finished 21st in the 100 fly with a time of 52.35 at the NCAA Championships; Ivy League High Point Swimmer of the Meet; All-Ivy first team honoree in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 free relay and 800 free relay; All-Ivy second team honoree in the 400 free relay; broke Blodgett Pool record in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly at the Ivy League Championships.
 
Madhav Dhingra, Sr., Men’s Squash, Economics (Delhi, India)
Team captain; led Harvard to a second-place finish at the Collegiate Squash Association Team Championship (Potter Cup); went 12-3 (5-1 Ivy); competed primarily at No. 5 but played half his matches at No. 4 and No. 6; led Crimson to No. 2 finish in the nation.
 
Ryan Donato, Jr., Ice Hockey, Sociology (Scituate, Mass.)
The ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist; became the 32nd player in program history to top the 100-point mark, finishing his Crimson career with 104 points (60 goals, 44 assists) in 97 games played; led the Crimson in scoring with 43 points (26 goals, 17 assists) in 2017-18; first-team All-ECAC Hockey and All-Ivy; led the nation with an average of .90 goals per game and had a conference-leading .89 points per game in ECAC Hockey contests; recorded three hat tricks on the season; played for the U.S. men’s ice hockey team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, leading the team with six points (five goals, assist) before returning to complete the season at Harvard; continuing studies at Harvard while a member of the NHL’s Boston Bruins.
 
Dean Farris, So., Men’s Swimming and Diving, History & Science and Society (Atlanta)
All-America first team honors in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke; All-America honorable mention in 50-yard freestyle; named the Phil Moriarty High Point Swimmer of the Meet at the Ivy League Championships; broke the Harvard pool record in the 50 free at the NCAA Championships, clocking in with a time of 19.16; All-Ivy first team in 200 free, 100 back and 200 back, as well as 400 free and 800 free relays; posted three top times in the nation (200 free, 200 back, 100 back); recorded the best time in the nation in the 200 back at the Ivy League Championships (1:31.12); shattered the program record in the 200 free, recording the second best time in the nation in the 200 back (1:38.99) at the Ivy League Championships.
 
Josef Johnson, Sr., Wrestling, Economics (Piscataway, N.J.)
Made third NCAA Championships appearance; All-Ivy first team selection; finished the season with a 29-13 overall record, including a 7-3 mark in dual matches; placed third in the Jonathan Kalhoust Bearcat open with a 4-1 record; won the Franklin and Marshall Open at 174 Pounds with a perfect 5-0 record; faced nine nationally ranked opponents and earned two victories, including a 3-1 decision in sudden victory in the NCAA Championships; finished fifth at 174 pounds in the EIWA Championships to qualify for NCAA Championships.
 
Maria Lasota, So., Women’s Fencing, English (Silver Spring, Md.)
Finished 12th at the NCAA championships this season; earned All-America honorable mention; led the sabre squad this season with a 57-30 overall record and a plus-74 touch differential; posted a 9-9 record at the Ivy League Round Robins.
 
Kayley Leonard, Jr., Women’s Squash, Psychology (Harrison, N.Y.)
Collegiate Squash Association All-America first team honoree for the third-straight year; unanimous selection for first-team All-Ivy; led Harvard to the 2018 National Championship and Ivy League title, its fourth- and third-straight, respectively; Ramsay Cup (National) quarterfinalist; competed primarily at No. 3, but also played six matches at No. 1 and No. 2; undefeated in the team season, going 15-0 (7-0 Ivy) on the year; posted a nearly flawless record of 45-2 in dual match play; went 4-0 against other All-America honorees; has won 26 straight matches in dual play; helped Harvard extend its win streak to 53 consecutive matches, the longest run in program history.
 
Gabrielle Thomas, Jr., Women’s Track and Field, Neurobiology (Florence, Mass.)

Alex Hartke, Sr., Gymnastics, Nursing (Fort Montgomery, N.Y.)
NCAA Regionals qualifier (floor); ECAC Specialist of the Year; first-team All-ECAC; career highs on floor (9.925) and beam (9.825) this season; second on floor at ECAC Championships.
 
Anna Peyton Malizia, Jr., Women’s Track & Field, Biological Basis of Behavior (Tampa, Fla.)
Won the high jump at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships, setting program record in the process (5-10 ¾); matched or set a new season high on four occasions throughout the season.
 
Jake Raynis, Sr., Men’s Fencing, Political Science (Chatsworth, N.J.)
Earned first-team All-Ivy with a 10-4 performance at the Ivy League Round-Robins; led the team with 60 individual wins; his .697 win percentage was second among epee fencers.
 
Anna Ross, Sr., Women’s Basketball, Psychology (Syracuse, N.Y.)
Second-team All-Ivy; set program records for career starts (120) and assists (491), as well as assists in a season (151); averaged 8.0 points per game; led Ivies in assist/turnover ratio; first Penn player with points/assists double-double since 2007; led Quakers to the second round of the Postseason WNIT.
 
Joe Velliquette, Sr., Wrestling, Mathematics (Nixa, Mo.)
Punched a ticket to the NCAA Championships at 157 pounds with a fifth-place finish at EIWA Championships; had 15 wins on the season; went 3-1 at Keystone Classic and 2-1 at Midlands.
 
Caleb Wood, Sr., Men’s Basketball, Sociology (Reno, Nev.)
Played in all 33 games; averaged 10.2 ppg and 2.0 rpg; second on team with 64 three-poinrers; had 18 double-figure scoring games; led Penn to a share of the Ivy League title, its first since 2006-07; led Penn to a win at the Ivy League Tournament and a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
 
David Yacobucci, So., Men’s Squash, Science, Technology & Society (Greenwich, Conn.)
Went 14-8 at Penn's No. 3 and 4 spots on the ladder; made it to the championship match of the Molloy North draw at the CSA Individual Championships.
 
Stephanie Wolf, Sr., Women’s Fencing, Cognitive Science (Newton, Mass.)
Qualified for NCAA Championships.; finished season with a team-high 79 wins; went 22-6 at Philadelphia Invitational; went 12-6 at the Ivy League Round-Robins for second-team All-Ivy honors.

Cole Buese, Jr., Men’s Swimming, Economics (Lutherville Timonium, Md.)
Second-team All-Ivy in the 200 fly and 200 free relay; reached three A finals in 2015-16 to help Princeton win the Ivy League title; recipient of the 2015-16 William B. Nash Memorial Award for sportsmanship and performance by a freshman.

Won the 60-meter hurdles at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships with a meet-record time; Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer at Ivy Heps; holds the school record in the 110 hurdles.

First-team All-America; All-Ivy; Captain; Earned All Ivy-America and All-Ivy League Honors for the fourth straight year; 13th Tiger ever to earn All-Ivy honors four-straight years.
 
David Hallisey, Sr., Men’s Ice Hockey, Economics (Wethersfield, Conn.)
Honorable mention All-Ivy; third on the team in scoring; led Tigers to ECAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament bid; ECAC Commissioner’s Award; finished fourth on the team in scoring with 30 points on 13 goals and 17 assists; named ECAC Player of the Week (Nov. 29) and named to the ECAC All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List.
 
Kasia Nixon, So., Women’s Fencing, Undeclared (Los Angeles)
NCAA epee champion; All-American; first-team All-Ivy, going 17-1 at the Ivy Round-Robins; finished fourth at the NCAA regional; No. 1-ranked junior in the U.S. in 2017; No. 6-ranked senior in the U.S. in 2017; won gold at the Junior Olympics and the Junior World Cup in Finland; earned a place at the 2017 Junior World Championships representing the U.S. in Bulgaria.

Led Yale to the WBI Championship, marking the first-ever postseason championship for an Ivy League women’s basketball team; led Bulldogs to their first appearance at the Ivy League Basketball Tournament; first-team All-Ivy selection; ranked in the top 10 in the League in scoring and rebounding; 1,000 point career scorer.
 
Kaitlin Gately, Sr., Women’s Ice Hockey, Political Science (Hingham, Mass.)
Played in 26 games; scored one goal and had eight assists; finished fifth on the team in scoring; her nine points marked a career-high; elected captain by her teammates.
 
Paedyn Gomes, Sr., Men’s Track and Field, Mechanical Engineering (Chesterland, Ohio)
Earned second-team All-Ivy recognition by finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles; team captain.

Adam Larkin, Sr., Men’s Ice Hockey, Economics (Clarkstown, Mich.)
One of Yale’s top defensemen; played in all 31 games and had seven points on one goal and six assists; finished with five goals and 26 assists in his career; culminated a career that never saw a missed game due to injury.
 
Jocelyn Lehman, Sr., Women’s Squash, Psychology (Greenwich, Conn.)

Received the Career High Point Swimmer Award at Ivy League Championships; Ivy League Champion in 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyles.
