PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell men’s track & field team accomplished something that had never been done before at an Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championship, men or women, winning the 2016 title after two days at Princeton’s Weaver Stadium.
The Big Red totaled 211 points, the first time in Ivy Heps outdoor history a men’s or women’s time has eclipsed 200 points, surpassing the previous mark of 199 set in 2008.
It marked the 16th overall title for Cornell and first since 2014. Host Princeton placed second with 157 points, followed by Penn (79), Brown (58), Dartmouth (51), Yale (46), Harvard (46) and Columbia (34).
The 54-point margin of victory is the largest since that 2008 Big Red team defeated Princeton, 199-128.
Cornell had seven individual winners, one relay victory and four runner-up finishes on Sunday to pull away from the Tigers. On the track, senior Ben Rainero claimed the 5K title to go along with his 10K win from Saturday, the first Ivy to win both in the same year since Princeton’s Michael Franklin did so the last time Ivy Heps was at Princeton.
After setting the meet record in prelims (13.86), senior Max Hairston won his third 110mH title, just the third Ivy to accomplish the feat, joining Penn’s Randy Cox 1984-87) and Yale’s Sherwood Finley (1942-46-47). Hairston then placed second in the 400mH. Freshman Zach Menchaca won the 100m and placed second in the 200m.
In the field, the Big Red went 1-2 in the high jump, led by sophomore Myles Lazarou, and picked up wins in the javelin (Rob Robbins) and triple jump (Bobby Plummer).
The coaches voted Rainero Most Outstanding Track Performer and Big Red junior Rudy Winkler Most Outstanding Field Performer, after the latter set the all-time Ivy League record in the hammer throw on Saturday.
The highlight of this Mother’s Day, however, came after the 800m, when the winner Brown senior Ned Willig was presented the medal by his mother, Sally Willig, a former Princeton runner who was coached by retiring Tigers head coach Peter Farrell.
