JJ Klein joined the Ivy League in July 2021 and serves as Assistant Executive Director of Communications & Championships. In this role, he leads communications strategy and execution for several of the conference’s sports, including football, women’s soccer, wrestling, men’s and women’s squash, men’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, softball, and women’s rowing. Klein also serves as the primary sport administrator for men’s and women’s squash and assists in the planning and administration of Ivy League championships and events.
Klein directs the League’s storytelling and media relations initiatives, collaborating with all eight member institutions to elevate the Ivy League’s brand across digital, social and traditional media platforms. He has played a key role in executing the League’s Unrivaled Experience campaign and led the communications strategy behind the Ivy League’s monumental announcement to participate in the FCS Playoffs.
Before joining the Ivy League, Klein spent two years in the Army West Point athletic communications office, advancing from Athletic Communications Assistant to Assistant Director. He served as the primary contact for 18 different varsity programs and the secondary contact for the football team during the 2020 season.
He has twice been recognized as a regional winner in College Sports Communicator’s Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. His story Back on the Big Stage highlighting Yale’s journey back to the NCAA tournament earned him the 2024 District I award for event coverage. His feature story A Match with Meaning earned him the top general feature/blog award in the 2020 contest. District I covers the Northeast and parts of Canada.
Prior to Army, Klein was the Communications Coordinator for Cornell University Athletics, where he managed communications for 11 varsity teams and led coverage of women’s ice hockey’s trip to the Frozen Four. He has also held communications and media relations roles with the Buffalo Bills, Colgate University, Syracuse University, the Syracuse Crunch and the Syracuse Salt Cats.
A native of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Klein graduated from Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in December 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Media. He resides in Jersey City, N.J.
