BLACK LIVES MATTER.

A statement from Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris:
"It is long overdue to speak up in support of the Black community, accept responsibility and take deliberate action to condemn all forms of systemic racism and social inequality. While the Ivy League stands on a storied history, we acknowledge there were unfortunate chapters that did not advance society towards racial equality. Moving forward, it is our pledge to examine and identify structural changes needed to promote a diverse and inclusive culture in all aspects of our operations. Simultaneously, we are committed to being a visible, vocal and meaningful voice throughout college athletics."

Ongoing Steps:
  • We will foster a culture of inclusion and showcase the many ways intercollegiate athletics can break down barriers of prejudice and discrimination.

  • We can and will continue to do more.

Initial Steps:
  • The Ivy League will actively promote non-partisan voter registration, including by designating Election Day (November 3, 2020) as a day off from any required athletics activity. [UPDATE 8/25/20]: The League announced a partnership with Vote.Org on August 25.)

  • The Ivy League office will be closed Friday, June 19, 2020 in recognition of Juneteenth and encourages support of the movement to make the day a national day of reflection. [UPDATE (6/19/20]: The Ivy League office joined several of its member institutions in honoring Juneteeth as a day of reflection away from the office.)

  • The Diversity and Inclusion representatives at each institution will be formed into a league-wide standing committee with monthly discussions supported through the league office. [UPDATE (8/21/20]: The League has formally organized this Committee. The group meets consistently at least once a month.

  • Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris will initiate opportunities to listen to student-athletes at each institution in the league to learn about their experiences, allow them to voice concerns and communicate recommendations through a series of discussions. These conversations will begin in July 2020. [UPDATE 8/1/20]: Harris met with black student-athletes from Penn in July. Multiple forums across a number of league constituents (e.g., student-athletes, administrators, Ivy League office staff) are in the planning stages. [UPDATE 2/1/21: Through conversations with the league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Harris and other Ivy League administrators continue to have open and honest conversation with student-athletes from each institution. [UPDATE 2/1/21]

  • The League funded two Black student-athletes from each Ivy League institution to attend the annual Black Student-Athlete Summit. In addition, each institution supported several current student-athletes, coaches and administrators to attend the Summit. [UPDATE 1/6/21]

  • The League will collaborate with conference peers to influence and advocate for change including through national dialogue and committee appointments. [UPDATE (8/25/20)]: The League and League office staff has been part of several conversations with colleagues across the nation. Ivy League personnel will continue to honor this ongoing commitment attending several discussions and sessions regarding racial injustice and social inequality.]

  • The Ivy League office continues to engage in weekly conversation regarding race relations, social injustice and how to foster an office based on inclusivity and equality. Talks include organic conversation and professionally-facilitated and moderated discussion to further the office culture. [UPDATE 1/19/21]

The Ivy League office welcomes the perspective and recommendations from all to ensure sustained discussion and meaningful progress by emailing IdeasForChange@IvyLeague.com
