2014 Sochi Winter Games
2,850 Athletes, 89 Countries, 98 Events
Those that watched the 2014 Winter Olympic Games felt a strong Ivy League presence throughout the two weeks of competition. In total, 27 current and former Ivies represented five countries in Sochi, Russia.
Nine Ivies were represented in the women’s ice hockey gold medal game on Feb. 20, including five on Canada’s squad, which defeated Team USA in overtime to capture the gold. Cornell’s Brianne Jenner, Laura Fortino ’13, Rebecca Johnston ’12, Lauriane Rougeau ’13 and Dartmouth’s Gillian Apps ’13 all represented Canada.
Team USA was led by Harvard head coach Katey Stone and joined by familiar faces in current and former Crimson Lyndsey Fry ’15, Michelle Picard ‘16, Josephine Pucci ‘16 and Julie Chu ‘07.
Following the Games, Chu was selected as the United States flag bearer for the Closing Ceremonies. Former Crimson star Caitlin Cahow also participated in the Closing Ceremonies as a member of the USA's Presidential delegation. Another Harvard standout, Angela Ruggerio, served the Games as a member of International Olympic Committee.
Yale also had eyes on the women’s hockey medal games as Bulldog freshman Phoebe Staenz ’17 played an integral role in her Switzerland squad winning the bronze, the first-ever Olympic medal for the Swiss women’s ice hockey team.
Dartmouth sent 12 representatives to Sochi and two gathered medals. Hannah Kearney ’15 earned the bronze medal in the women’s moguls. Kearney was attempting to become the first freestyle skier to win back-to-back gold medals following her top performance in the 2010 Olympic Games.
The Big Green also boasted a silver medal from Andrew Weibrecht ’09. Weibrecht won silver in the super-G alpine skiing. Weibrecht has now won medals in back-to-back Olympics after he won Bronze in the super-G in Vancouver.
Cornell’s medal count was capped off when Jamie Greubel ’06 earned Bronze in the women’s bobsled. Greubel’s 3:51.61 time placed her third on the medal stand earning her first Olympic hardware.
