The Lajos Csiszar Trophy is named after Lajos Csiszar, who served as the men's and women's fencing coach from 1948 to 1974. Csiszar led the Quakers to two NCAA Team Championships including the first-ever National title in Penn's history in 1953 and again in 1969.

The long-time coach led nine NCAA Individual Champions and 27 All-Americans. The coach was named the NCAA Coach of the Year in 1967 and 1973, before being inducted into the US Fencing Hall of Fame and the Penn Hall of Fame in 1996.
