ITHACA, N.Y. - Following victories in the semifinals, No. 2 Princeton and No. 4 Penn will clash in the 2024 Ivy League Men’s Lacrosse Championship game.
The Tigers and Quakers compete for the tournament crown on Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m. on Schoellkopf Field on the campus of Cornell University.
No. 2 Princeton 14, No. 3 Yale 10
The Tigers of second-seeded Princeton advanced to their second straight Ivy League Championship, using a dominant third quarter to take down Yale University Friday night’s first semifinal.
A closely contested first half saw the score tied 5-5 at intermission before Princeton erupted for six goals in the third period of action to take a commanding four-goal lead. Sophomore Chad Palumbo and freshman Tucker Wade scored two goals apiece in the frame as the Tigers held on for the win with an evenly played fourth quarter.
Palumbo led all players with five goals in game on just six shots, while Princeton’s Michael Gianforcaro held the high-scoring Yale offense in check with 16 saves. The Bulldogs entered this weekend’s tournament as the nation’s top-scoring team with 15.93 goals per game.
No. 4 Penn 13, No. 1 Cornell 9
In the evening’s nightcap, the University of Pennsylvania pulled off the upset of top-seeded Cornell University behind a stifling defensive performance that included 19 saves from goalkeeper Emmet Carroll. Carrol is a Tewaaraton Award nominee and ranks third in the NCAA with a 0.594 save percentage.
The Quakers carried a three-goal edge, 7-4, in the halftime intermission before the Big Red looked to mount a second half comeback with a 4-3 scoring advantage in the third quarter. However, Penn’s defense locked in and limited Cornell to just one goal on nine shots in the fourth and final period of play.
Offensively, Ben Smith scored three goals to lead a Penn attack that saw five different players score at least two times in the contest.
