Ivy League Announces Men’s Basketball Major Awards and All-Ivy Teams

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League announced the 2021-22 Men’s Basketball awards, with the league’s major awards going to members from Princeton, Brown, and Cornell.

Princeton junior forward Tosan Evbuomwan has been chosen as the Ivy League Men’s Basketball Player of the Year after leading the Tigers to a regular season championship. Evbuomwan was the fourth-highest scorer in the Ivy League at 15.4 points per game, ranked seventh with 6.3 rebounds per game and was the leader in assists at 5.0 per game. The Newcastle, England, native was a unanimous selection for the accolade.

Being named the Defensive Player of the Year for a second-straight season is Brown’s Jaylan Gainey. The senior led the Ivy League and ranked 34th nationally with 2.2 blocks per game and he ranked fifth in the league with 6.9 rebounds per game. Gainey posted a Brown record eight blocks in a win over Columbia on Feb. 26, one of 20 games in which he posted more than one block.

Gainey’s teammate Kino Lilly Jr. was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year after concluding after a stellar first season. Lilly was Brown’s second leading scorer at 13.3 points per game, which ranked ninth in the Ivy League, and was one of the league’s best shooters at 43.4 percent and 39.9 percent in field goal and three-point percentage, respectively. He also averaged 1.3 steals per game which placed him sixth in the conference.

Rounding out the major awards was Coach of the Year winner Brian Earl of Cornell. The Big Red were selected to finish seventh in the Ivy League at the start of the year, but it surprised everyone by posting a 15-10 record and advancing to Ivy Madness.

Evbuomwan was one of four unanimous selections for First Team All-Ivy, the others being Harvard’s Noah Kirkwood, Penn’s Jordan Dingle, and Yale’s Azar Swain. That quartet is joined by another Princeton player, senior guard Jaelin Llewellyn. For Swain and Kirkwood, it’s their second-straight appearance on the All-Ivy First Team. Swain ranked second and Kirkwood ranked third in scoring for the Ivy League with averages of 18.9 and 17.7 points per game, respectively. Kirkwood also added 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Dingle led the league in scoring at 20.6 points per game and Llewellyn rounded out the top-five scorers at 15.4 points per game, just .04 behind his teammate Evbuomwan.

The All-Ivy Second Team was expanded to six players due to a tie in voting and five schools were represented amongst the team. Brown’s Tamenang Choh and Gainey were joined by Yale’s Jalen Gabbidon, Princeton’s Ethan Wright, Dartmouth’s Brendan Barry and Cornell’s Dean Noll.
