Ivy League Announces Football All-Ivy, Rookie of the Year & Coach of the Year

PRINCETON, N.J. – Ivy League champions Dartmouth and Princeton headlined the All-Ivy football teams, with Big Green and Tiger student-athletes garnering 25-of-68 overall honors.

Columbia sophomore quarterback Joe Green earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors. Serving as the signal caller for the Lions, Green helped lead them to a 7-3 overall record. The Sammamish, Wash., native finished the season with 1590 yards and 11 total touchdowns. Green, who was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week three times, only threw three interceptions. He is fifth player from Columbia to earn the honor and the first since linebacker Alex Gross claimed it in 2007.

After leading Dartmouth to its third consecutive 9-1 season and its league-leading 20th Ivy League title, head coach Buddy Teevens was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year for the second straight season. In his two stints at the helm of the program, Teevens has guided the Big Green to five Ivy titles.

The Big Green finished the season ranked near the top of several national categories. Offensively, its .688 completion percentage ranked second. Additionally, the Big Green took care of the football, as it allowed the third fewest turnovers in the FCS. Defensively, Dartmouth had the second-best red zone defense in the nation. The Big Green is 35-5 over the past four seasons.

Ivy League champion Princeton paced the league with 13 All-Ivy selections, including a league-high 10 first team honorees. Both senior linebacker Jeremiah Tyler and senior wide receiver Jacob Birmelin were unanimous first team all-league selections. Birmelin led the league in receptions (64) and receiving yards (784). Tyler, also a unanimous first team selection in 2019, led the Tigers in tackles with 58.

Dartmouth placed 12 members on All-Ivy teams – the second most in the league. The Big Green had five first team honorees and seven second team members.

Harvard, which finished with a 5-2 Ivy mark, had the second most first team honorees with eight and placed 11 on All-Ivy teams overall. Junior running back Aaron Shampklin was a unanimous first team selection, after finishing the season with league-leading 92.8 yards per game.

Yale and Columbia, which both ended the season at 4-3 in Ivy play, had the third and fourth most All-Ivy selections respectively. The Bulldogs had nine All-Ivy honorees, while the Lions had eight.

Cornell (6), Penn (5) and Brown (4) each produced multiple All-Ivy picks after 1-6 League campaigns.

Each of the league's eight programs had at least one First Team All-Ivy selection.

Yale senior Melvin Rouse II was the lone student-athlete to be recognized at multiple positions, garnering second team honors at both wide receiver and return specialist.

Additionally, one Ivy League student-athlete from each institution was recognized for their commitment in the classroom and on the field as members of the 2021 Ivy League Football Academic All-Ivy team. Brown senior Chad Broome-Webster, Columbia senior Ben Mathiasmeier, Cornell senior Hunter Nourzad, Dartmouth senior Connor Davis, Harvard senior Spencer Rolland, Penn graduate student Isaiah Malcome, Princeton senior James Johnson and Yale senior Brett Gerber were each named to the team.

The 2021 Asa S. Bushnell Cup Presentation, honoring the Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will take place on Monday, Dec. 13, at the famed New York Athletic Club. The Bushnell Cup finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
