Three Top-20 Opponents on the Weekend Slate for Men’s Lacrosse

PRINCETON, N.J. -- After a dominating weekend that saw four Ivies knock off ranked opponents, Ivy League lacrosse returns for another challenging weekend of games against some of the nation’s best, highlighted by No. 9 Cornell’s trip to No. 16 Ohio State on ESPNU.
 
The Ivy League is off to its best start since 2012, boasting a 14-3 overall record including five wins over ranked opponents. With four teams - No. 1 Yale, No. 6 Penn, No. 8 Princeton and No. 9 Cornell - the Ivy League ranks second among conference with four in the ledger, trailing only the ACC (5).

The 2020 Ivy League Men’s Lacrosse Tournament will be held at Hofstra’s James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y., May 1 and May 3. Since the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship began in 1971, the league has won 10 national champions and 27 Final Four teams, including Yale’s run to the 2018 national title.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • FOUR IN THE TOP-10 - After defeating No. 2 Penn State, 12-10, last weekend No. 1 Yale is on top of both major polls this week to highlight four teams in the top-10. Joining Yale in the top 10 is No. 6/9 Penn, No. 8/10 Princeton and No. 9/10 Cornell. The League ranks second among conferences with four teams in the rankings, trailing the ACC (5). Four of the last nine remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I Lacrosse are Ivies - Dartmouth (2-0), No. 9 Cornell (3-0), No. 8 Princeton and No. 1 Yale.
  • KEYSTONE STATE BATTLE - No. 6 Penn will play host to No. 2 Penn State at Franklin Field on Saturday in a matchup that will feature some of the most prolific scocers in the country. The Quakers, fresh off a thrilling win over then-No. 10 Duke, are led by Sean Lulley who is tied for first among national leaders in goals per game (5.00) and is fifth in points per game (6.50). The Nittany Lions, who suffered a setback to Yale, will rely on Mac O’Keefe and Grant Ament. O’Keefe is averaging 4.67 goals per game to rank fifth with Ament slotted second behind Princeton’s Sowers in points per game (7.50).
  • (BIG) RED HOT SCORING - No. 9 Cornell will travel to No. 16 Ohio State in what will likely be an display of offensive prowess as the two teams rank in the top-15 in the nation in scoring in front of a national television audience on EPSNU. The Big Red are second behind Hobart in scoring offense, averaging 19 points per game.   • SHOW YOUR STRIPES - No. 8 Princeton, fresh off a huge upset over second-ranked and defending national champion Virginia, will look to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2010 when the Tigers host No. 18 Johns Hopkins. Hopkins will have its hands full with senior attackman Michael Sowers, who leads the nation in points per game (11.00) and assists per game (7.33) and Phillip Robertson who is ninth among national leaders with four goals per game.
  • BIG GREEN STATEMENT - Dartmouth, one of nine remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division I Lacrosse, will look to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2006 when they visit UMass Lowell on Saturday. The Big Green are led by George Prince, who ranks fifth in points per game (6.50) and ninth in goals per game (4.00).
