PRINCETON, N.J. -- Thirteen Ivies competed in Week 4 of the 2020 National Football League (NFL) season, with eight starting for their respective clubs.
Harvard alumnus
Cameron Brate caught his first touchdown pass from
Tom Brady—a three-yard reception. The touchdown was the 28th of his Brate’s seven-year career as a tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Teammate
Justin Watson paced all Buccaneers wide receivers by appearing on 74 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. The Penn alum compiled a season-high four catches for 40 yards.
Tight end
Stephen Carlson, a Princeton product, also put points on the board via a two-point conversion for the Cleveland Browns. Carlson recovered a blocked extra point in the end zone for the first points of his sophomore NFL season. He also added three tackles on special teams.
Sixteenth-year quarterback
Ryan Fitzpatrick out of Harvard connected on 29-of-45 passes for 315 yards and added 47 yards and a touchdown on six rushing attempts for the Miami Dolphins.
Fellow Crimson product
Kyle Juszczyk—a four-time Pro Bowl fullback with the San Francisco 49ers—added a 13-yard reception on the offensive side of the ball.
Three Ivy League-educated offensive linemen—Cornell’s
JC Tretter of the Cleveland Browns, Harvard’s
Nick Easton of the New Orleans Saints and Penn’s
Greg Van Roten of the New York Jets—played every offensive snap for their respective teams.
Yale’s Atlanta Falcons duo of tight end
Jaeden Graham and linebacker
Foye Oluokun put on a show on Monday Night Football. Graham posted a 13-yard kickoff return, while Oluokun appeared on 97 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, accumulating eight tackles.
Long snapper
Tyler Ott (Harvard, Seattle Seahawks), linebacker
Brandon Copeland (Penn, New England Patriots) and tight end
John Lovett (Princeton, Green Bay Packers) also appeared in Week 4.
A member of the Tennessee Titans, Harvard alumnus
Anthony Firkser’s Week 4 game was postponed to later in the season due to positive COVID-19 tests.
Twenty-one Ivies earned NFL roster spots entering the 2020 season, with 14 on 53-man active rosters and seven on 16-man practice squads during Week 4.
Twenty-six Ivies appeared on NFL rosters during the 2019 season, headlined by four-time Pro Bowl fullback Juszczyk and 2019 Super Bowl champion tight end Lovett.
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Ivy League has postponed the 2020 football season. A decision on whether fall sport competition will be feasible in the spring will be determined at a later date.
