PRINCETON, N.J. -- One season after winning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Columbia’s Osama Khalifa (Cairo) progressed to Player of the Year honors when the annual League awards were announced Thursday.
Khalifa’s election makes it back-to-back Player of the Year awards for Columbia after Ramit Tandon became the first Lion to win the award last year. The 2015 national runner-up, Khalifa went a perfect 7-0 from the No. 1 spot this season in Ancient Eight play this season.
Dartmouth freshman Carson Spahr (Milton, Mass.) was voted the Rookie of the Year, becoming just the second member of the Big Green to do so and the first since 2002. He competed out of the No. 1 and 2 spots and went 4-3 in League matches.
Dartmouth head coach Hansi Wiens earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Big Green to a 4-3 mark in conference play, which was their first winning Ivy League record in program history.
Khalifa was one of six unanimous All-Ivy selections in the coaches’ balloting, joining teammate Rishi Tandon (West Bengal, India), Dartmouth’s Alvin Heumann (Southport, Conn.), Harvard’s Bradley Smith (Lancashire, England), Penn’s Marwan Mahmoud (Alexandria, Egypt) and Yale’s Thomas Dembinski (New Haven, Conn.).
Also selected to the team were Harvard’s Bryan Koh (Singapore) and David Ryan (Dublin), Penn’s Hayes Murphy (Greenwich, Conn.) and Yale’s Sam Fenwick (Cardiff, United Kingdom).
