Football All-Ivy, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year Announced

Releases: Brown | Columbia | Cornell | Dartmouth | Harvard | Penn | Princeton | Yale

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Ivy teams were announced after an exciting 2016 season that saw Penn and Princeton share the League title.

After a vote by the eight Ivy head coaches, Dartmouth freshman wide receiver and return specialist Hunter Hagdorn (Manvel, Texas) was named Rookie of the Year, and Princeton head coach Bob Surace was unanimously selected Coach of the Year.

Hagdorn is the seventh Big Green to be named Rookie of the Year since the award was implemented prior to the 1981 season, and the first since Dalyn Williams in 2012. Hagdorn led the team in receiving with 56 catches for 706 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing six times for 25 yards and a TD. As a kick returner, Hagdorn averaged 19.4 yards per return. He ranks second in the League in receptions and yards, third in receptions per game and yards per game, third in all-purpose yards (1,002) and fourth in all-purpose yards per game (100.2). Hagdorn also earned second-team All-Ivy wide receiver honors.

Surace is the first-ever unanimous Coach of the Year recipient, with the award in its third year of existence. He guided the Tigers to a share of the Ivy League title, their 11th overall and second under Surace, as they previously accomplished the feat in 2013. Princeton finished the year 8-2, 6-1 in League play, their best records since that 2013 squad. Surace is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, annually given to the FCS Coach of the Year.

Unsurprisingly, 2016 Ivy champions Penn and Princeton led the way with six first-team recipients apiece.

The Quakers were led by their offensive unit, with four players receiving unanimous first-team All-Ivy nods, including senior quarterback Alek Torgersen (Huntington Beach, Calif.), senior offensive lineman Nick Demes (Western Springs, Ill.), junior running back Tre Solomon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior wide receiver Justin Watson (Bridgeville, Pa.), the League’s leader in receptions, yards, receiving touchdowns and all-purpose yards. Watson earns his second-straight unanimous first team honor. The Quakers also placed two defenders on the first team in junior defensive end Louis Vecchio (Orange, Calif.) and sophomore defensive back Mason Williams (Pasadena, Calif.).

In contrast, the Tigers were led by their defense, with four first-team All-Ivy honorees. Junior defensive lineman Kurt Holuba (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) was joined on the squad by three seniors, linebacker Luke Catarius (Sandwich, Mass.) and defensive backs James Gales (New York) and Dorian Williams (Streetsboro, Ohio). On offense, Princeton was led by unanimous first team running back John Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y.) who set a program record with 20 rushing TDs this season, and junior offensive lineman Mitchell Sweigart (Washington Boro, Pa.).

Harvard was next with five team recipients, including four on the offensive end. Sophomore wide receiver Justice Shelton-Mosley (Sacramento, Calif.), the 2015 unanimous Rookie of the Year, was a unanimous first team selection in 2016. He was joined on the first team by senior offensive lineman Max Rich (Portland, Ore.), senior tight end Anthony Firkser (Manalapan, N.J.) and junior offensive lineman Larry Allen, Jr. (Danville, Calif.). Senior defensive tackle James Duberg (Chula Vista, Calif.) was a unanimous selection to the first team on defense.

Three Brown players earned four first team accolades, as senior Alexander Jette (North Attleboro, Mass.) earned the honor as a wide receiver and a return specialist. He was joined on the first team by a pair of defenders in senior defensive end Richard Jarvis (Watertown, Mass.) and senior linebacker William Twyman (Sudbury, Mass.).

Cornell also placed three on the first team, including junior safety Nick Gesualdi (Sykesville, Md.), a unanimous selection. Sophomore running back Chris Walker (Lewisburg, Tenn.) and senior punter Chris Fraser (Potomac, Md.) also earned first team nods. Fraser, the 2013 Rookie of the Year, takes home his fourth first-team All-Ivy nod, the first Big Red to accomplish the feat and just the third player total in Ivy football history, joining a pair of Crimson in linebacker Dante Balestracci (2000-03) and running back Clifton Dawson (2003-06).

Columbia was led by its freshman placekicker Oren Milstein (Boca Raton, Fla.), a unanimous first team selection, along with senior linebacker Gianmarco Rea (Birmingham, Mich.). Dartmouth placed two on the first team in senior offensive lineman Dave Morrison (Latham, N.Y.) and senior linebacker Folarin Orimolade (Burtonsville, Md.). Yale was led by a pair of second team honorees in freshman running back Alan Lamar (Olive Branch, Miss.) and junior return specialist Jason Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

The finalists for 2016 Asa S. Bushnell Cup, which recognizes the Ivy League's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will be unveiled on Tuesday, Nov. 29 on IvyLeagueSports.com. The Bushnell Cup will be presented on Monday, Dec. 5, the day before the 59th National Football Foundation (NFF) Annual Awards Dinner, at a special press conference and reception presented by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses in the Vanderbilt Room of the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 12:30 p.m. ET.

The presentation will mark the seventh-consecutive year that the NFF has partnered with the Ivy League to recognize the conference's offensive and defensive players of the year and will be shown live and free of charge on The Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN).
