CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Havard
senior Amanda Sobhy was
honored Sunday afternoon with the 2015 Richey Award.
The Richey Award, named after Radcliffe graduate Betty Richey,
is given to the women's college squash player who represents the
ideals of squash, through devotion to the game, sense of fairness,
leadership and excellence on the court. The nominees are selected
by the CSA Executive Committee and the winner is voted on by the
coaches and players from each team at the CSA Team National
Championships.
Sobhy becomes the fourth Crimson student-athlete to win the
award, since its creation in 1984. The last Harvard student-athlete
to win the award was Diana Edge in 1988.
Sobhy has been one of the best players in squash since the first
day she joined the Crimson. After a victory at the No. 1 position
in the Howe Cup final, Sobhy finished her career undefeated in
collegiate team play. She is a three-time team national champion,
Ivy League Rookie of the Year, three-time Ivy League Player of the
Year and three-time individual national champion.
The Sea Cliff, N.Y., native, has also excelled on the
international stage. She became the first women to break in to the
top-10 while still in college, the first American woman to reach
No. 8 in the world and the first American to reach the
quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions. Recently, Sobhy
helped Team USA finish fifth at the World Squash Federation Women's
World Team Championship its best ever finish.
Sohby and her teammates now turn their attention to the
Individual National Championships at Princeton, Feb. 27 –
Mar. 1. Sobhy will look to win her fourth-consecutive title.
