PRINCETON, N.J. -- Top honors were bestowed on the Ivy League's best on the gridiron following a thrilling 2015 season that concluded with three teams sharing the conference crown for the first time in 33 years.
Leading the way amongst the honors announced and voted on by the League's eight head coaches was Harvard freshman wide receiver/return specialist Justice Shelton-Mosley being selected unanimously as Rookie of the Year and named first-team All-Ivy as a return specialist and second-team All-Ivy as a wide receiver. Penn head coach Ray Priore took home honors as Coach of the Year after leading his Quakers to a share of the Ivy title in his first season as head coach.
Shelton-Mosley (Sacramento, Calif). made a huge impact in his first season in Cambridge. He finished second on the team with 40 receptions for 589 yards and six touchdowns. On offense, he also ran for a touchdown and threw for another. Over on special teams, Shelton-Mosley was extra special, averaging 33.1 yards per kickoff return and 19.0 yards per punt return. He added another score on special teams with an 86-yard punt return for touchdown at Columbia on Nov. 7.
Shelton-Mosley is being considered for national Football Championship Subdivision honors as well as a finalist for STATS Freshman Player of the Year and two College Football Performance Awards honors as National Freshman Performer of the Year and National Special Teams Performer of the Year. He was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week four-straight times from Nov. 2-23, on Nov. 9, he became the first freshman to win three Ivy League weekly awards (Offensive Player, Co-Special Teams Player and Rookie) in the same week since the League added the Rookie of the Week award beginning with the 2002 season. He recorded the 10th different occurrence and was the eighth different rookie to be honored with multiple awards. He was also named STATS National Freshman of the Week honors.
He is the fifth Harvard player to be named the League's Rookie of the Year, joining Isaiah Kacyvenski (1996), Dante Balestracci (2000), Matthew Hanson (2008) and Treavor Scales (2009).
In his 29th season as member of the Penn football coaching staff, Priore took over the reigns as head coach and guided the Quakers to a magical season that included two road wins over ranked opponents (then No. 5/4 Villanova on Sept. 24 and then No. 12/13 Harvard on Nov. 14) and a five-win improvement over a year ago. The Harvard victory stopped the Crimson's 22-game winning streak, which at the time was tied for the longest active streak in NCAA Division I (FCS and Football Bowl Subdivision).
A finalist for the STATS FCS Coach of the Year, Priore became just the seventh person to win an Ivy football title in his first season, following Princeton's Dick Colman in 1957, Dartmouth's Jake Crouthamel in 1971, Joe Yukica in 1978 and John Lyons in 1992, Penn's Ed Zubrow in 1986 and Cornell's Jim Hofher in 1990.
The All-Ivy teams featured 11 players selected unanimously to the first team, led by Cornell junior punter Chris Fraser, who earned his third-straight, first-team All-Ivy selection and was the 2013 Rookie of the Year. Fraser (Potomac, Md.) led the League in punting average for a third year in a row at 45.1 yards per punt and 16 punts of 50 yards or more. His average ranked fourth in the FCS at the close of the regular season.
Joining Fraser as repeat unanimous selections on the first team were Harvard senior running back Paul Staton, Jr. and Dartmouth senior linebacker Will McNamara. Stanton, Jr. (Kenner, La.) ended his career among the top backs in school history -- second in total touchdowns (38) and rushing touchdowns (36), third in points (228) and fourth in rushing yards (2,906). McNamara (Chicago) closed his time in Hanover on a strong note with 69 tackles this season, good for fifth in the League, with four interceptions and four pass breakups.
Other unanimous first-team All-Ivy picks this year included Dartmouth senior cornerback Vernon Harris (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior defensive tackle A.J. Zuttah (Edison, M.J.), Harvard senior offensive lineman Anthony Fabiano (Wakefield, Mass.), senior offensive lineman Cole Toner (Greenwood, Ind.) and senior defensive back Sean Ahern (Cincinnati) and Penn sophomore wide receiver Justin Watson (Bridgeville, Pa.) and senior linebacker Tyler Drake (Plantation, Fla.). Harris, Zuttah, Harris, Toner and Ahern were repeat selections on the first team, as was Dartmouth senior wide receiver/return specialist Ryan McManus (Mendota Heights, Minn.) who made the first team as a wide receiver this year after being first team last year both as wide receiver and a return specialist.
Harvard paced the All-Ivy honors with 18 players taking home 19 honors (nine on the first team, nine on the second team and one honorable mention) with Dartmouth close behind with 17 players earning 18 honors (eight on the first team, seven on the second team and three honorable mentions). The Big Green's six first-team honors on defense ties for the most in League history with Cornell in 1986 and Harvard in 2007.
The finalists for 2015 Asa S. Bushnell Cup, which recognizes the Ivy League's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will be unveiled on Tuesday, Dec. 1 on IvyLeagueSports.com. The Bushnell Cup will be presented on Monday, Dec. 7, the day before the 58th National Football Foundation (NFF) Annual Awards Dinner, at a special press conference and reception presented by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses in the Vanderbilt Room of the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 12:30 p.m. ET.
The presentation will mark the sixth-consecutive year that the NFF has partnered with the Ivy League to recognize the conference's offensive and defensive players of the year and will be shown live and free of charge on The Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN).
