PRINCETON, N.J. -- One playoff ain’t
enough Jack, you better make it two.
For the first time since the Ivy League went to a divisional
format in 1993, the Gehrig and Rolfe Division winners will each be
decided by a one-game playoff, with the winners advancing to the
Championship Series on Saturday, May 10.
Columbia (24-17, 15-5 Ivy) and Penn (24-16, 15-5 Ivy) entered the
weekend tied for first in the Gehrig Division and exited the
weekend tied for first in the Gehrig Division after splitting their
four-game set.
Yale (19-21, 11-9 Ivy) started the weekend with a two-game lead
over Dartmouth (17-19, 11-9 Ivy), but the Bulldogs split their four
game series with Brown (13-24, 6-14 Ivy) and the Big Green swept
its four-game series with Harvard (11-28, 5-15 Ivy) to move into a
tie in the division.
Cornell (18-21, 9-11 Ivy) closed out its Ivy slate by taking
three of four from Princeton (14-26, 8-12 Ivy).
Penn will host Columbia on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. thanks to its 4-0
combined record against Dartmouth and Yale, who have the next best
record outside of the tie. The Lions went 1-3 against the Big Green
and Bulldogs. Dartmouth will host Yale on Sunday at noon thanks to
its 3-1 mark against its Rolfe Division opponent. The Championship
Series will be hosted by the Columbia-Penn winner, as both the
Lions and Quakers have a better Ivy League record than Dartmouth or
Yale.
It marks the first tie in the Gehrig Division since 2009, when
Cornell defeated Princeton in a one-game playoff, and the first in
the Rolfe Division since 2002, when Harvard held off Brown to
advance to the Championship Series.
The storylines out of the playoffs are numerous. There could be a
rematch of last year’s Championship Series between Columbia
and Dartmouth, which would mean the Lions are back for the
second-straight year for the first time in their program’s
history or Dartmouth returns for a League-record seventh-straight
season. Penn could make its first trip to the Championship Series
since 2007 and Yale could punch its first ticket since 1995.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Columbia junior outfielder Gus Craig (Eugene,
Ore.) had seven RBI over five games last week, but none were more
important than the three he knocked in during the Lions’ 5-2
win in the final game of the four-game set against Penn that tied
the series and forced a one-game playoff for the right to play in
the Championship Series.
Craig batted .632 on the week (12-for-19) with three doubles, four
runs and seven RBI. He hit 8-for-12 (.667) in the Lions’
three wins last week with four runs and five RBI. Craig takes home
his first career Ivy League weekly award and becomes the second
Lion to be named Player of the Week this year, joining
Jordan Serena, who shared the honor with
Dartmouth’s Jeff Keller on March 4.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Columbia senior lefty David Speer (Westport,
Conn.) has made it a habit of pitching complete game shutouts this
season, with five and three, respectively. His pitching was a key
factor in the Lions’ split with Penn to force a one-game
playoff, as he allowed just six base runners total in a 6-0 victory
for Columbia. He struck out seven over his seven innings of work,
giving up just five hits while walking one. His victory was the
Lions’ 15th-straight, a program record.
Speer takes home his second career Ivy League weekly award, as he
also was named Pitcher of the Week earlier this season, on March
4.

CO-ROOKIES OF THE WEEK
A pair of freshman pitched like veterans last week, as
Brown’s Christian Taugner and
Dartmouth’s Mike Concato each posted
complete game shutouts.
Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) limited Yale to just five hits and six
baserunners while striking out a career-high 10 in a 7-0 Brown
victory. He had two 1-2-3 innings and only twice allowed a
baserunner to get to second-base. Taugner was also named Rookie of
the Week on March 11, the first Bear to receive the honor twice
since Will Marcal in 2012.

Concato (Woodbridge, Conn.) got the start in the first game of a
double header against Harvard that the Big Green needed to sweep in
order to force a one-game playoff for the Rolfe Division title. He
did not disappoint, tossing his second-consecutive shutout in a 9-0
Dartmouth victory. Concato allowed seven hits and eight base
runners over seven innings, striking out three. He matched the
Crimson starter for five innings as the two teams were in a
scoreless duel, including getting out of a bases-loaded jam with
one out in the third, and then Dartmouth’s bats came alive
with nine runs in the sixth.
Concato is the first Dartmouth pitcher in the last 26 years to
throw two complete-game shutouts in one season. He is the first Big
Green pitcher to receive two Rookie of the Week awards in Dartmouth
program history.
