PRINCETON, N.J. -- One final weekend of Ivy
League baseball action will determine which teams will earn berths
to the Championship Series.
Maybe.
Five teams remain in contention for the two spots, including three
squads that are still in the running for the Rolfe Division title:
Yale, Dartmouth and Harvard.
Yale (17-19, 9-7 Ivy) controls its own destiny, as it just needs
to win at least three of four against Brown (10-20, 4-12 Ivy) to
hold off Dartmouth (12-19, 7-9 Ivy), which is a mere two games
behind the Bulldogs. The Big Green need to win at least three of
four against Harvard and get some help from the Bears in order to
tie or overtake Yale. The Crimson (10-24, 5-11 Ivy) could sneak in
and take the title with a sweep of the Big Green and a sweep of
Yale by Brown.
The race to the Gehrig Division title is slightly less convoluted.
Columbia (21-15, 13-3 Ivy) and Penn (22-14, 13-3 Ivy) are tied for
first and play a four game set this weekend, two in New York and
two in Philadelphia. The Lions are looking for their
second-straight Championship Series berth, while the Quakers are
hoping to make their first appearance since 2007.
Columbia pulled into a tie with Penn thanks to a four-game sweep
of Cornell (15-19, 6-10 Ivy), the Lions’ first since 1994,
and the Quakers’ 2-2 split at Princeton (12-22, 7-9 Ivy).
A tie in either division would result in a one-game playoff to
determine which team advances to the Championship Series. Any
playoff games would take place on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday
following the final weekend of the regular season at the team that
owns the tiebreaker. If that were to happen, the Championship
Series would shift to the following weekend, May 10-11.
If Columbia and Penn split this weekend, the tiebreaker to host
the playoff would go to record against the team with the highest
League winning percentage regardless of division.
If Dartmouth and Yale end up tied, the Big Green will host the
playoff thanks to its 3-1 record against the Bulldogs.
The Championship Series is guaranteed to be hosted by the Gehrig
Division winner, as whichever team finishes on top will have a
better record than the Rolfe Division winner.
The Ivy League® Digital Network is your source to
catch all the exciting action this weekend. All four of the games
between Penn and Columbia will be on the network, along with all
four contests between Cornell and Princeton. The audio feed of
Saturday’s doubleheader between Brown and Yale will be
available along with a live video stream of Sunday’s
double-header between Harvard and Dartmouth.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Penn junior catcher Austin Bossart
(O’Fallon, Ill.) had a stellar week at the plate, batting
11-for-16 (.611) with a double, a home run, six runs and four RBI.
He slugged .833 and walked twice for an OBP of .696, as Penn split
a pair of double headers at Princeton to move into a tie for
first-place in the Gehrig Division with Columbia. Bossart recorded
a hit in each of the five games last week, including a 4-for-5,
one-double, two-RBI, one-run performance in the second game against
Princeton on Saturday.
Bossart takes home his second career Player of the Week honor and
first of the season. Penn has received four Player of the Week
awards in the past five weeks. The four honors this year marks the
most for the Quakers in a single season in their program’s
history.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
For the fourth-straight week, Yale has received Pitcher of the
Week. For the third time in those four weeks, the honor goes to
sophomore Chris Lanham (Houston), who pitched a
gem in a 1-0 win over Harvard. Lanham went the distance and allowed
just two hits as the Bulldogs won in extra innings on
Robert Baldwin’s sac fly RBI in the bottom
of the eighth. Lanham struck out five and picked up his third
complete game of the season.
Lanham is the first Bulldog to earn three Pitcher of the Week
honors in one season in program history and the first Ivy to do so
since Cornell’s Connor Kauffman in 2012.
Yale is the first team to receive Pitcher of the Week on four
consecutive weeks since Dartmouth in 2000.

CO-ROOKIES OF THE WEEK
Columbia freshman infielder Will Savage (Bronx,
N.Y.) has been a key component to his team’s program-record
13-game winning streak, batting .451 (23-for-51) during that
stretch with 14 runs, four doubles, one triple and eight RBI. Last
week, as Columbia went 5-0, Savage batted 8-for-20 (.400) with four
runs and three RBI. He hit three doubles for a slugging percentage
of .550 and swiped four bases.
Savage is Columbia’s first-ever three-time Rookie of the
Week recipient.

Dartmouth freshman pitcher Mike Concato
(Woodbridge, Conn.) made sure his first collegiate victory was a
memorable one, pitching a complete-game, four-hit shutout of Brown.
Concato allowed a leadoff double to start the game and then
proceeded to retire 15 of the next 16 batters. He got out of a
two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the sixth after inducing an
inning-ending double play, and then got a foul pop for the last out
of the game after Brown had loaded the bases in the seventh.
Concato struck out a season-high six batters in the win.
Concato is the first Big Green to take home Rookie of the Week
honors this season.
