Baseball Weekly Release - Week 2
Updated Baseball Statistics in pdf format
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Big wins over top-ranked
teams: just another week in Ivy League baseball.
The Ancient Eight took to the diamond for the first time in 2014,
with Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth and Yale all picking up wins
against tough opponents, the highlight of which being the
Bulldogs’ 8-7 victory over No. 3 LSU.
Cornell took two of three at Navy, while Columbia split a
four-game set with South Florida, handing the Bulls their first two
losses of the season. Dartmouth, meanwhile, dropped two of three at
FIU, ranked No. 30 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
But the big win came in Baton Rouge, La., where Yale handed No. 3
LSU just its second loss of the season with an 8-7 victory.
Trailing the Tigers 6-0 in the fourth, the Bulldogs scored four in
the top of the fifth and eventually knotted the game at seven with
two more in the seventh. Then in the top half of the eighth,
Green Campbell reached first on a bunt, got to
third on a pair of ground outs and came home on an LSU error for
the gamewinning run.
The upcoming week is highlighted by Brown’s season opening
series, against none other than the team currently ranked No. 1 in
the nation by some polls, South Carolina.
CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Columbia junior Jordan Serena (Parker, Colo.) was
instrumental in the Lions’ 2-0 start – their first
since 1999 – as he batted 5-of-9 () with two doubles, four
runs, an RBI and a stolen base in his team’s first two games
of the season, both victories over South Florida. For the week,
Serena hit .562 (9-of-16) with six runs, three doubles, one RBI,
one walk and three steals. He recorded at least one hit and scored
at least one run in each of the four games over the weekend.
Serena earns his first career Ivy League weekly award and becomes
the first Lion to receive the first Player of the Week honor of the
season since Nick Cox in 2011.

given the ball to start the Lions’ first game of the season.

over eight innings while giving up just five hits in a 1-0 Columbia
victory. It marked the Lions’ first win in a season opener
since 2002. Speer threw 102 pitches while shutting out a Bulls team
that came into the contest averaging 9.4 runs and 12.7 hits per
contest.
Speer earns his first career Ivy League weekly award and gives the
Lions Pitcher and Player of the Week for the first time since March
30, 2010, when Dean Forthun was named Player of
