PRINCETON, N.J. -- Although it's early in the 2014 Ivy League baseball season, so far the three-time defending Championship Series winner Gehrig Division looks to have the upper hand.

Cornell (5-2) took three of four from George Washington and holds the best record in the League. Close behind is the defending champion Columbia (4-4), which went 2-2 against Kennessaw State last week. Princeton (2-5) picked up its first two wins of the year thanks to a split with Michigan. Penn (0-6) is the lone Ivy team without a win in this young season, but the Quakers are close to breaking through, as they fell to Navy, Towson and Monmouth by scores of 2-1, 4-2 and 7-5.

In the Rolfe Division, six-time defending champ Dartmouth (1-2) was off last week. Brown opened its season with none other than No. 1 South Carolina, and although the Bears were swept, they acquitted themselves well, including a hard-fought 1-0 loss in the final game of the series. Harvard (1-7) picked up its first win of the year, a 4-0 shutout of Lamar, before dropping the final three games of the set, including a pair of one-run losses. Yale (1-3) only played once last week, suffering a 10-7 defeat at the hands of LIU.

All eight teams are in action this week. The highlights are Dartmouth's two-game series with No. 27 TCU and Harvard's set with Michigan State on Saturday and Sunday.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell senior Tom D'Alessandro (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was instrumental in his team's performance against George Washington, as the Big Red won the final three games of the four-game set with the Colonials. D'Alessandro reached base safely in all four games and scored at least run in each of the four contests. His best performance came during the Big Red's 8-1 win in the final game, when he went 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs, four RBI and six stolen bases. His six steals marked a program single-game record.

D'Alessandro takes home his first career Ivy League weekly award and becomes the first Big Red to be named Player of the Week since JD Whetsel on March 19, 2013.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK/CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
If Brown freshman righty Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) was feeling any nerves during his first career start (which happened to be against the No. 1 team in the nation), he certainly didn't show it. Taugner limited top-ranked South Carolina to seven hits over seven innings of work in a 1-0 loss, walking two and striking out three. In the bottom of the fourth inning, a walk and a single followed by a fielder's choice put men on second and third. Taugner got the Gamecocks' Elliott Caldwell to fly out, plating the run and again putting men on second and third. But that was it for South Carolina, as Taugner got the next two batters out to escape the jam.

Taugner is the first Bear to be named Pitcher and Rookie of the Week since Anthony Galan shared both awards on March 15, 2011. Taugner is the first Brown player to be sole Pitcher of the Week since Matt Kimball on March 8, 2011.

CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Princeton freshman outfielder Danny Baer (Edina, Minn.) made his mark in the Tigers' four-game set with Michigan, batting .333 (5-for-15) with three runs, two doubles, a triple and four RBI. He recorded at least one hit in three of the four games, including a pair of multi-hit performances. In Princeton's 6-5 win against the Wolverines that staked the Tigers to a 2-1 series lead, Baer went 2-for-5 with two runs, a double, a triple and two RBI.

Baer gives Princeton back-to-back Rookie of the Week honors for the first time since April 5 and 12, 2011, when Mike Ford was the recipient each time.
