PRINCETON, N.J. -- Another exciting season for Ivy League football produced another extraordinary list of postseason honors, highlighted by Cornell freshman safety Nick Gesualdi named Rookie of the Year, Harvard head coach Tim Murphy chosen Coach of the Year and six players selected unanimous first-team All-Ivy in a vote by the conference's eight head coaches.
Gesualdi impressed in his initial season in Ithaca, leading all Ivy League rookies in tackles (58), passes defended (8) and interceptions (4), and is second in tackles for loss (5.0) and third in sacks (2.0). His four picks tied for the League lead with two of them coming in one most dominant defensive performances in school history. In the Big Red's Big Red's Empire State Bowl win over Columbia, Gesualdi singlehandedly ended three Lions possessions -- intercepting two passes, forcing a fumble. He also broke up a pass and had a huge sack on Columbia's final drive to secure the win. The Sykesville, Md., native is the second-straight Cornell player to take home the League's Rookie of the Year award and becomes the fifth Big Red player to receive the honor, joining Derrick Harmon (1981), John McNiff (1989), Jeff Mathews (2010) and Chris Fraser (2013).
Murphy led Harvard to perfection and its 16th Ivy League title as his Crimson went 10-0, capped off by a defining victory in the 131st playing of The Game over archival Yale. A finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as the Football Championship Subdivision Coach of the Year, Murphy guided the Crimson to its eighth Ivy tile under his tutelage, posting the team's third undefeated season (10-0) since 2001. In 21 seasons at the helm in Cambridge, he sits third all-time in League history in most overall wins with 147, just one behind Penn's Al Bagnoli's 148, and Ivy wins with 104, just eight behind Bagnoli.
Three of Murphy's key contributors this season earned unanimous recognition on the All-Ivy first team in senior defensive back Norman Hayes, senior defensive lineman Zack Hodges and junior running back Paul Stanton, Jr.
Hayes (Tucker, Ga.) amassed 143 tackles, including 7.0 for a loss, in his career. In the victory over Yale in The Game, the two-time, All-Ivy pick made a Harvard season-best 13 stops.
Hodges (Atlanta), the reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS, led the conference with 8.5 sacks. He closed his illustrious career as Harvard's all-time sacks leader with 27.0 sacks. Hodges is the only three-time, first-team selection among this year's selections.
Stanton, Jr. (Kenner, La.) spearheaded the Harvard ground attack with 990 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games of action. He eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark six times this season, including 235-yard, three-touchdown performance at Penn.
Yale senior tailback Tyler Varga (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada) joined Stanton, Jr. in the League's unanimous first-team backfield after an outstanding senior season that saw him run for a League-leading 1,423 yards and 22 touchdowns overall and 902 yards and 12 touchdowns in Ivy play. Twice he accounted for five touchdowns in a game, including his five-score day in the Bulldogs' overtime upset of Army and has 17 triple-digit rushing outings in his 24 collegiate games. Varga is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award as the FCS's most outstanding player, a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is bestowed upon the nation's top football scholar-athlete.
Ironically, the two other unanimous first-team All-Ivy honorees tied for the League high in tackles as Dartmouth junior linebacker Will McNamara (Chicago) and Princeton senior linebacker Mike Zeuli (Marlton, N.J.) each recorded 87 total tackles to close out their respective careers. McNamara led a defensive unit that anchored the Big Green's best season in 17 years. He picked off two passes to give him four for his career and added 4.0 tackles for loss. Zeuli led the League with 16.5 tackles for loss, which stood five more than any other player in the conference and seven more than any player outside of Princeton. He closed his time on Old Nassau with 207 career stops.
Continuing his already impressive career so far, Fraser (Potomac, Md.) was voted unanimously to the first team for the second-straight year. Fraser averaged at least 40 yards per punt in nine of the Big Red's games and at least 42.0 yards in six of them. Of his 62 punts, 13 were fair caught, 21 were downed inside the 20-yard line and 10 were booted for 50 or more yards.
Along with Hayes, Varga and Fraser, Dartmouth senior offensive lineman Scotty Whitmore (Spring, Texas), Harvard senior offensive lineman Nick Easton (Lenoir, N.C.) and Yale senior wide receive Deon Randall (San Diego) returned as All-Ivy first teamers for a second time. Dartmouth's Ryan McManus (Mendota Heights, Minn.) earned two first-team honors this season as a wide receiver and as a punt returner on special teams.
Harvard paced the All-Ivy honors with 18 players taking home 19 honors with Dartmouth close behind with 16 players earning 17 honors. The Big Green's 10 first-team honors among nine players totaled the most in school history and just the sixth time in League history a team has 10 or more first-team selections.
The finalists for 2014 Asa S. Bushnell Cup, which recognizes the Ivy League's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will be unveiled on Tuesday, Dec. 2 on IvyLeagueSports.com. The Bushnell Cup will be presented on Monday, Dec. 8, the day before the 57th National Football Foundation (NFF) Annual Awards Dinner, at a special press conference and reception presented by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses in the Vanderbilt Room of the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 12:30 p.m. ET. The presentation will mark the fifth-consecutive year that the NFF has partnered with the Ivy League to recognize the conference's offensive and defensive players of the year. The presentation will be shown live and free of charge on The Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN).
