PRINCETON, N.J. -- In voting of the Ivy League's men's soccer head coaches, Princeton senior Cameron Porter has been named the Offensive Player of the Year and Harvard junior Mark Ashby has been named Defensive Player of the Year. Ashby's teammate Sam Brown has been named the League's Rookie of the Year.
For the first time, the League voted a Coach of the Year. Dartmouth's second-year head coach Chad Riley earned that honor after leading his squad to a share of the Ancient Eight title and the NCAA Championship's automatic bid.
Porter (Centerville, Ohio) leads the Ivy League and NCAA Division I in goals (15) and points (34) overall. In eight Ivy matches, Porter had a League-best seven goals and one assist for 15 points. He closed out the season scoring in nine of the last 10 matches, including seven of eight in Ivy play.
Ashby (Denton, Texas) started all 17 matches for a Crimson squad that held the opposition to one goal or less in seven of eight Ivy matches this season and allowed just five goals in League play. He also scored three goals on the season, including the game-winner against Yale in the Ivy opener.
This is the second year that the Ivy League has chosen an Offensive Player of the Year and a Defensive Player of the Year. Harvard's last Player of the Year was forward Andre Akpan in 2009, who played with New York and New England in MLS last season. Princeton's last Player of the Year was Antoine Hoppenot in 2010, who is currently a member of the Philadelphia Union in MLS.
Brown (Ann Arbor, Mich.) started 16 of 17 contests in his rookie season. He was tied for the team-lead in assists with five, including a key helper late in the first half in a 1-1 tie with Dartmouth. He is the first Crimson player to earn Rookie of the Year honors since Brian Rogers in 2009.
Riley led the Big Green to an 11-4-2 mark overall this season. Dartmouth earned its first Ivy title since 2011, sharing it with Princeton at identical 5-1-1 marks. The Big Green outscored the opposition, 15-5, during League play. Dartmouth will host Fordham in the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Thursday.
Porter and Ashby were the lone unanimous selections to the All-Ivy first team. There were 13 selections on the first team and 14 on the second team due to ties in the voting. Eleven more players received honorable mention.
Harvard led the way with four first-team All-Ivy selections. Junior forward Tim Schmoll (Coppet, Switzerland), senior midfielder Kyle Henderson (Mill Valley, Calif.) and sophomore midfeilder Andrew Wheeler-Omiumu (Bellingham, Mass.) joined Ashby on the first team. Princeton and Dartmouth each had three first team selections. The Tigers placed Porter, junior midfielder Brendan McSherry (Freehold, N.J.) and junior defender Josh Miller (Portland, Ore.) on the first squad, while the Big Green had senior forward Alex Adelabu (Houston), senior defender Gabe Hoffman-Johnson (Falmouth, Maine) and junior goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland (Dayton, Ohio) on the first team.
Penn senior forward Duke Lacroix (New Egypt, N.J.), the 2013 Ivy League Player of the Year, also earned first-team honors along with Brown junior midfielder Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Cornell senior defender Peter Chodas (La Canada, Calif.).
All eight squads were represented on the first and second-team selections. Dartmouth and Harvard each had five selections to those two squads, while Princeton and Cornell both had four.
