PRINCETON, N.J. -- After leading the Tigers to
their first 6-0 Ivy League season and outright title since 2001,
Princeton senior goalie Tyler Fiorito (Phoenix,
Md.) was a unanimous choice as the 2012 Player of the Year amongst
the League’s seven head men's lacrosse coaches.
Fiorito, who was also a unanimous All-Ivy first team selection
for the second consecutive season, finished the regular season with
a 6.65 goals against average and a .615 save percentage in all
games played. His goals against average ranks fourth best
nationally, while his save percentage is currently third best. In
Ivy League play, his goals against average dropped to 5.53 and his
save percentage moved up to .680. All told, he made 126 saves
throughout the regular season including 16 saves at Brown on March
31 and 16 saves at Syracuse on April 7.
Fiorito has now been named to three consecutive All-Ivy first
teams and was also a second team honoree as a freshman. He becomes
the first Princeton player to earn Ivy League Player of the Year
honors since Ryan Boyle in 2004. Dating back to
when the award was first bestowed in 1974, Fiorito is the sixth
Tiger to earn the honor and the first goalie, joining Kevin
Lowe (1974), Jesse Hubbard (1996),
Jon Hess (1997), Ryan Mollett
(2001) and Boyle (2002 & 2004). he is the sixth goalie to earn
the honor, and first since Brown's Jordan Burke
won in 2008 and 2009.
Cornell freshman attackman Matt Donovan earned
the League’s Rookie of the Year honor, also in a unanimous
vote by the head coaches. He is the first Cornell player to earn
the honor since Rob Pannell did so in 2009. Dating
back to the first Ivy League Rookie of the Year award in 1981, he
is the fifth Big Red player to earn the honor, joining Paul
Schimoler (1986), Sean Greenhalgh (2002),
Max Siebald (2006) and Pannell.
Donovan, a Morristown, N.J. native, led the Big Red in scoring
through the regular season with 32 points on 18 goals and 14
assists. His 14 assists also was a team high mark. In six
conference games, Donovan scored nine goals and added eight assists
for 17 points while also picking up 13 ground balls. He made
history this season by earning five Ivy League Rookie of the Week
honors. Dating back to 1987, six other players had earned the award
four times in a season, but Donovan became the first to earn five.
He was also named to the All-Ivy second team.
Joining Fiorito as unanimous selections to the All-Ivy first
team were the Harvard duo of attackman Jeff Cohen
(Syosset, N.Y.) and midfielder Kevin Vaughan
(Ridgewood, N.J.) as well as Princeton midfielder Tom
Schreiber (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Princeton defenseman
Chad Wiedmaier (Chatham, N.J.).
Cohen ranks second in the country with a 3.43 goals per game
average and stands 12th with 4.0 points per contest. He led the Ivy
League with 48 goals, 56 points and eight man-up tallies this
spring and became Harvard’s all-time career goal scorer with
142. His 167 career points (142-25-167) are tied for sixth in
program history and his 48 goals this season rank seventh most in a
single season at Harvard. The attackman, who recorded 10 hat tricks
as a senior, netted a season and career-high seven goals in the
Crimson’s 11-7 win over Michigan on March 31. His 142 goals
rank eighth most all-time in Ivy League history.
Vaughan, a midfielder from Ridgewood, N.J., led Harvard with 19
assists, while ranking third with 17 goals and 36 points. Vaughan,
who served as one of the Harvard captains for the second straight
season, was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List in 2012. He
tied for second on the Crimson with 33 ground balls as a senior. He
was also selected to the All-Ivy first team as a junior and
concluded his career with 98 points (56-42-98).
Schreiber, a sophomore, is making his second consecutive
appearance on the All-Ivy first team midfield after putting
together one of the greatest seasons ever by a Princeton
midfielder. A season removed form being named the League’s
Rookie of the Year, Schreiber leads the Ivy League and ranks 10th
in Division I in points per game (4.08), and he has registered at
least two points in every game and at least three in 12 of 13
games. He has 29 goals and 24 assists for 53 points, making him the
first Princeton player since Boyle in 2004 to reach 50 points in a
season. In six Ivy League games, he netted 11 goals and 13 assists
for 24 points.
Wiedmaier is the first four-time first-team All-Ivy League
selection in Princeton men’s lacrosse history and the second
in Ivy League men’s lacrosse history (Siebald was the first).
Wiedmaier ranks fifth in Division I with 2.38 caused turnovers per
game, and he averaged 2.67 per game in the Ivy League. His presence
helped Princeton rank fourth in Division I in scoring defense. In
addition to his on-field performance, Wiedmaier is also one of 10
finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award, largely because
of his work in Uganda and here with Fields of Growth.
Rounding out the All-Ivy first team attack are Yale senior
Matt Gibson (Point Lookout, N.Y.) and Princeton
junior Jeff Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y.). It marks
Gibson’s second consecutive appearance on the All-Ivy first
team and he was also a second team honoree as a sophomore. He leads
the Bulldogs with 25 goals and 42 points this season and he ranks
fifth on the Yale career points list with 153. His 91 career goals
(ninth) and 62 career assists (eighth) are also to top-10 all-time
marks at Yale. Froccaro, a second team midfield selection as a
freshman, earned All-Ivy first team honors after scoring 24 goals
and adding 10 assist for 34 points.
Joining Vaughan and Schreiber in the All-Ivy first team midfield
are seniors Roy Lang (Mill Valley, Calif.) of
Cornell and Greg Mahony (Mercer Island, Wash.) of
Yale. Lang is making his second consecutive appearance in the first
team All-Ivy midfield. He scored 15 goals this season and added
four assists for 19 points. In six Ivy League games played, Lang
totaled seven goals and four assets while also picking up 14 of his
22 ground balls. Mohony, who earned second team All-Ivy honors in
2010 and 2011, scored 19 goals and added seven assists for 26
points this season. Mohony’s 73 career goals rank 17th
all-time at Yale.
Junior defenders Peter Johnson (Minnetonka,
Minn.) of Yale and Jason Noble (Orangeville,
Ontario) of Cornell round out the defensive corps on the All-Ivy
first team. Johnson was an honorable mention selection as a
freshman and has notched and assist to go along with 37 ground
balls this season. Johnson and the Yale defense have given up just
8.52 goals against this season. Noble, an honorable mention
selection last year, leads a Cornell defense that has yielded just
over 8.54 goals against per game. He has a goal and an assist to go
along with 33 ground balls this season.
