PRINCETON, N.J. --
Thirty-five Ivies will participate in the Parade of Nations and watch the Olympic cauldron be reignited on Feb. 9 in PyeongChang, South Korea—ending a 101-day Olympic torch relay and signaling the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
The Ivy League contingent includes 33 athletes and two coaches, representing 7-of-8 Ivy League institutions—Brown (2), Columbia (1), Cornell (8), Dartmouth (15), Harvard (4), Princeton (1) and Yale (5)—and 6-of-92 participating countries—Bermuda (1), Canada (9), Hungary (1), Switzerland (1), Unified Korea (2) and the United States (21).
Nineteen Ivies will be making their Olympic debuts in PyeongChang, while the 16 returners possess a combined 10 Olympic medals (five gold, two silver, three bronze).
The Ivy League has a storied tradition of Olympic influence, consistently ranking among the top NCAA conferences in Olympic participation. The League has accumulated 472 medals all-time, including six during Sochi 2014 and five during Rio 2016.
Three hundred and six medals will be distributed in 15 disciplines during the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, with Ivies participating in 6-of-15 sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsled, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing and ice hockey.
Of the 35 Ivy League representatives, 30 competed intercollegiately at their alma mater in sports ranging from ice hockey (16) and skiing (8) to track & field (5), cross country (1), field hockey (1), rowing (1) and volleyball (1).
Seven Ivies—
Lauren Gibbs,
Evan Weinstock,
Jamie Greubel Poser,
Josh Kirkpatrick,
Emily Dreissigacker,
Susan Dunklee and
Elizabeth Swaney—exemplify the common Winter Olympic theme of talent transfer, a key initiative as the United States and other countries work to gain stronger footholds in sports not readily accessible or enthusiastically followed at home. These Ivies, like many of their Olympic peers, were each talented enough to be recruited to play NCAA Division I sports but have since parlayed those skills into an entirely different sport for their home country.
Harvard's
Ryan Donato, who is 1-of-4 collegians on the 2018 United States Olympic men’s ice hockey team, is the lone current Ivy League student-athlete competing in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Tricia Mangan is a current undergraduate student at Dartmouth, but has not competed intercollegiately. The League will also have a pair of current undergraduates representing the United States in the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games from March 9-18:
Staci Mannella, an alpine skier from Dartmouth, and
Declan Farmer, a sled hockey player from Princeton.
