Rhonda Anderson: Cornell Legend of Ivy League Basketball

By: Rhonda Anderson, Cornell Women's Basketball Legend

Why did you choose to attend an Ivy League institution?

I felt that my choice of Cornell University provided me with the best opportunity for a productive and fruitful career.

What comes to mind when you think about the Ivy League?

“Iron sharpens iron.” When you are surrounded by the best and brightest, it serves as a catalyst to bring out the best in you.

How do you feel your Ivy League experience helped prepare you for your career?

Our response to challenge and adversity often determines our destiny. The time spent at Cornell University as a student-athlete challenged and stretched me beyond what I felt that I could accomplish. The academic rigor coupled with the opportunity to develop leadership skills through athletics provided a solid foundation for pursuing my career aspirations.

What is your most memorable experience from your time as an Ivy League student-athlete?

The camaraderie of the team in spite of very challenging seasons and the fact that during my senior year, we finally got an “away” win against an Ivy opponent! That was MAJOR! Additionally, during many of our road trips, Cornell alumni would invite the team to their homes for pre-game meals. Their hospitality and kindness left an indelible impression.

How did your Ivy League experience compare to your expectations?

My experience far exceeded my expectations, particularly as it pertains to my athletic career. It never entered my mind that I’d leave Cornell University as the women’s basketball all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Additionally, the lifelong friendships made during my time as a student-athlete are valued and treasured.

What Ivy League school did you enjoy competing against the most and why?

I enjoyed competing against all of the Ivies. Each venue had its special nuisance. For instance, having an opportunity to play in the legendary Palestra was something that a very small percentage of student-athletes could claim.

What would you share with a prospect deciding on attending either an Ivy or non-Ivy League school?

I would encourage a prospect to choose a school that has a strong academic reputation, diverse student population and stellar graduate school or career placement rate. Of course, the value of an Ivy-league education cannot be underestimated. Due to the competitive admissions process, the opportunity to matriculate as a student-athlete at an Ivy League school in itself is a testament to a prospect’s commitment to excellence both on and off the court.

What does it mean to you to be a Legend of Ivy League Basketball?

I am completely humbled by the honor and extremely grateful for the recognition. It means that even though it’s been a few decades since I’ve laced up the high tops, my accomplishments still have a place in the history of Ivy League sports, and that is a blessing.
