Three Teams Within Four Points After Day 1 of Women's #IvyHeps

Live Broadcast: Day 1 | Day 2

HANOVER, N.H. -- Three teams are within four points of each other after day one of the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Track & Field Championships, Saturday at Dartmouth’s Leverone Field House.

Day two gets underway at 10am. The Ivy League Network (ILN), available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app on Android and iOS devices, will begin its broadcast at 11am, also simulcast on ESPN3.

Penn leads the way with 32 points, just ahead of five-time defending champion Harvard (29) and host squad Dartmouth (28). Princeton is not far behind either with 20 points, followed by Cornell (19), Brown (12), Columbia (9) and Yale (6).

The Quakers were led by senior Abby Hong, who won the 3K for not only her first career #IvyHeps points, but also the first win ever by Penn in the event. Quakers freshman Danielle Orie placed fifth, three spots ahead of her sister, Cornell freshman Gabrielle. Penn also picked up points in the shot put, where sophomore Maura Kimmel placed second behind Big Red senior Michaela Smith, and the pentathlon, where sophomore Elena Brown-Soler took fifth.

Harvard junior Gabrielle Thomas and sophomore Simi Fajemisin went 2-3 in the long jump to give the Crimson 14 points. Thomas also advanced to both the 60m and 200m finals, breaking her own Ivy League 60m record in the process. Crimson sophomore Zoe Hughes took second in the pentathlon behind Brown junior Carly Paul, who became the first Bear to win the event since Natasha Smith in 2008.

Dartmouth claimed two titles on day one. Sophomore Cha’Mia Rothwell won the long jump with a jump of 20-7, matching the second-best mark in meet history and third-best all-time in Ivy League history. She also broke her own meet record while advancing in the 60mH, crossing the line in 8.28. Fellow classmate Julia Valenti took the pole vault after clearing 13-3 ½, fifth-best in meet history. Valenti is the second-ever Big Green to win the pole vault, joining Elizabeth Beck in 2000, the inaugural year of the event.

Thomas and Rothwell will have another chance to compete against each other tomorrow, as both advanced to the 200m final.
