United States Bobsleds In Medal Contention, Men's Ice Hockey Advances to Quarterfinals

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Twelve Ivies appeared in Winter Olympic action on Tuesday, Feb. 20, including PyeongChang debuts for Lauren Gibbs and Jamie Greubel Poser. The United States men’s ice hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals, while both American women’s bobsled pairs propelled their sleds to top four positions heading into the medal heats on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Elana Meyers Taylor and Gibbs—a Brown volleyball alumna—registered start (5.22) and track (50.52) records (1st overall) in Heat 1 and went 50.81 (2nd overall) in Heat 2. Cornell field hockey and track & field alumna Greubel Poser and Aja Evans crossed the line in 50.59 (3rd overall) in Heat 1 and 50.99 (8th overall) in Heat 2. Meyers Taylor and Gibbs sit second heading into Heats 3 and 4 with a cumulative time of 1:41.33, while Greubel Poser and Evans are fourth at 1:41.58—each of the two sleds are within .32 seconds of gold medal position.  

The United States men’s ice hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-1 victory over Slovakia. Ivies accounted for 3-of-5 goals for Team USA—current Harvard men’s ice hockey student-athlete Ryan Donato (17:33) had his second two-goal game in PyeongChang and Yale men’s ice hockey alum Mark Arcobello (14:59) netted his first Olympic goal. Yale alumni Brian O’Neill (14:01) and Broc Little (13:14) also registered assists, while Harvard product Noah Welch (17:14) contributed on the defensive end.
 
The United States and assistant coach Keith Allain will take on the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

In women’s ice hockey classifications, Yale women’s ice hockey alumna Phoebe Staenz (23:33) and Switzerland earned a fifth-place finish with a 1-0 victory over Japan. The Unified Korean team, featuring Princeton women’s ice hockey product Caroline Park (16:28) and Harvard women’s ice hockey alum Randi Griffin (18:41), fell to Sweden in the seventh-place game, 6-1.
 
In biathlon, Dartmouth alumna Susan Dunklee was part of the United States 2x6km women + 2x7.5km men mixed relay that placed 15th with a time of 1:12:05.4.
