Lisa Brummel, Yale Legend of Ivy League Basketball

By: Lisa Brummel, Yale Women's Basketball Legend

Why did you choose to attend an Ivy League institution?

I chose an Ivy League institution because it was the most challenging of my college choices. I wanted to be pushed academically. I also felt the diversity of the student body would give me a chance to expand my knowledge through people vs. books.

What comes to mind when you think about the Ivy League?

Smart people who value making a difference in the world.

How do you feel your Ivy League experience helped prepare you for your career?

During my time at Yale, I met such a diverse group of people with different backgrounds and points of view. They challenged my thinking and caused me to broaden my views of the world around me. As I moved into my career, I found this same challenge of getting to know and work with people who were different than I. My experience at Yale was the perfect on-ramp to my career.

What athletic accomplishment are you the most proud of?

I am most proud of being able to letter in four sports during my time at Yale.

What off-court accomplishment are you most proud of?

Being part of an all-female ownership group of a professional sports franchise.

How did your Ivy League experience compare to your expectations?

My experience far exceeded expectations. My teammates were extraordinary athletes and amazing human beings and my classmates were smarter, more diverse, more insightful and dedicated than I ever would have imagined.

What would you share with a prospect deciding on attending either an Ivy or non-Ivy League school?

Ivy League schools offer the best blend of academics and athletics. Your classmates and teammates will help guide you to new learnings and new ways of thinking, all of which help you prepare for whatever post-college career you choose.

Have you ever worked with another former Ivy League student-athlete?

I am currently business partners with a Yale rower and Olympic silver medalist—Ginny Gilder (Yale ’79).  She and I share much in common from our Ivy League backgrounds and that makes it very easy to work together.
