Ivies Post 6-2 Opening Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Victories over teams that were ranked or receiving votes in the latest polls propelled Yale junior attacker Izzy Nixon and Princeton freshman defender Mary Murphy to this week’s women’s lacrosse weekly honors. 
 
LEAGUE NOTES
  • Ivies went 6-2 on the opening weekend of the 2018 women’s lacrosse season, highlighted by Yale’s 12-10 upset of then-No. 24/RV Albany.
  • No. 9 Princeton, No. 14 Penn and No. 17 Cornell are ranked in this week's IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll. No. 12 Princeton, No. 14 Penn and No. 18 Cornell are also listed in the latest Inside Lacrosse Women’s Division I Media Poll. 
  • Princeton sophomore midfielder Tess D’Orsi ranks third in the nation with 5.00 goals per game.
  • Harvard junior midfielder Keeley MacAfee and Princeton freshman midfielder Kyla Sears are tied for fifth nationally with 6.00 goals per game.
  • Harvard senior goalie Olivia Gundrum leads the nation with a .737 save percentage, while Princeton senior goalie Mary Kate McDonough tops NCAA Division I with a 4.10 goals against average.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Yale junior attacker Izzy Nixon led the Bulldogs with four points—via a goal and three assists—in a season-opening 12-10 upset of then-No. 24/RV Albany. The victory, in which Nixon also accounted for a team-high 10 draw controls, is Yale’s second over a ranked team in as many seasons, following a 15-12 win over then-No. 19 Stanford on April 1, 2017.
 
Off the field, the Greenwich, Conn., product was published in a peer-reviewed medical journal in 2015, while serving as a research assistant at Stamford Hospital’s Center for Integrative Medicine & Wellness.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton freshman defender Mary Murphy was a key cog in the Tiger defensive unit that held RV Temple to just 16 shots and four goals in a 17-4 season-opening win. The Owls entered the game averaging 24.5 shots and 15 goals per contest.
 
In her first collegiate appearance, Murphy tallied a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers. The Amawalk, N.Y., native posted a 66-12-2 record in four years at Somers High School.
