Weinstock Propels Top U.S. Sled, Seven Ivies Advance to Women's Ice Hockey Final

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Nine Ivies featured in Winter Olympic events on Monday, Feb. 19, as seven guaranteed themselves a medal by advancing to the women’s ice hockey gold medal game.

The Laura Schuler-led Canadian women’s ice hockey team—powered by six Ivies—advanced to the gold medal game for the sixth time in six Olympics to feature the sport. Cornell alumna Rebecca Johnston (17:33) netted her team-best third goal in PyeongChang, as the Canadian club defeated the Olympic Athletes from Russia, 5-0. Dartmouth women’s ice hockey product Laura Stacey (9:30) and Cornell alum Laura Fortino (21:37) tallied assists in the semifinal bout. Big Red alumnae Brianne Jenner (16:28), Lauriane Rougeau (15:13) and Jillian Saulnier (5:33) also saw ice time in the victory.

As predicted, Canada will meet the United States in the gold medal game for the third-straight Olympics. The Thursday, Feb. 22, meeting will be a rematch from Group A, where Canada prevailed, 2-1. The Canadian side will be looking for its fifth-straight Olympic gold medal—though it would be the first for Dartmouth women's ice hockey head coach Schuler and Ivy alums Stacey and Jenner.

Harvard product Elizabeth Swaney, a freestyle skier for Hungary, did not advance to the finals after finishing 24th in ski halfpipe qualification with a score of 31.40.

On the bobsled track, the 2-man team of Justin Olsen and Evan Weinstock—a Brown track & field alumnus—recorded the top American finish, placing 14th with a combined time of 3:18.54. The pair went 49.53—their best time in PyeongChang—in Heat 3 (11th overall) and finished with a 49.80 in Heat 4 (16th overall).
