PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Two Ivies made their PyeongChang debuts during Winter Olympic action on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Canadian and United States men’s ice hockey teams—which claim a combined seven Ivies—both learned their opponents entering the bracketed portion of the Winter Olympic tournament.

Ben Scrivens is part of the Canadian side that earned a bye to the quarterfinals of the men’s bracket by virtue of being the top No. 2 finisher in group play with seven points. After starting the first two group games in goal, Scrivens did not appear in Canada’s 4-0 win over South Korea to close out Group A play on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Canadians will meet the winner of Finland and South Korea in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Elsewhere in the bracket, the United States team that features six Ivies earned a rematch with Slovakia, which it defeated 2-1 behind a pair of goals from current Harvard men’s ice hockey player
Ryan Donato on Friday, Feb. 16. Should the Americans prove victorious in the rematch on Tuesday, Feb. 20, they would face the Czech Republic—the No. 2 overall qualifier out of group play—in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
In women’s ice hockey classifications, Switzerland defeated Unified Korea, 2-0. Yale women’s ice hockey product

Caroline Park (19:52) competed for Unified Korea. On Tuesday, Feb. 20, Switzerland will face Japan in the fifth-place game, while Unified Korea will look for its first victory of the 2018 Winter Olympics in the seventh-place bout against Sweden.

Tommy Ford, a United States alpine skier, made his PyeongChang debut in the giant slalom, placing 20th with a time of 2:21.63.
Bobsled competition also got underway, with the 2-man team of Justin Olsen and
Evan Weinstock—a Brown track & field alumnus—registering the top American combined time through two heats at 1:39.21 to sit 12th. In Weinstock’s Olympic debut, the pair went 49.66 in Heat 1 (12th overall) and improved to 49.55 in Heat 2 (sixth overall). Heats 3 and 4 will be contested on Monday, Feb. 19.
